Brian Little - Wrexham win over Chester crucial for survival

BRIAN LITTLE admitted that the result was all the mattered in yesterday's big derby against Chester City.
A goal in each half from Paul Hall – his first in Wrexham colours – and Michael Proctor's 10th strike of the season, sealed a 2-0 victory for the Reds at The Deva Stadium.
Chester created a host of scoring chances and Little, although admitting his side had not been at their best, was delighted to have clinched three points.
"I thought we rode our luck at times," said Little today. "I don't think we played very well and we were our own worst enemies.
"There were mistakes in areas where we could have been a bit tighter but the result is fantastic.
"The result was all-important and that is all that matters.
"They were two good finishes and outside of that, if there was a difference between the sides, our two finishes were better than theirs."
Victory leaves basement side Wrexham just three points away from safety, and a single point behind second from bottom Mansfield Town, and the Reds also have games in hand.
The majority of results involving their relegation rivals 24 hours before the derby were favourable for Wrexham and Little said the win was a big boost in the battle to beat the drop.
"Whatever the results the day before, it adds a different slant to the game whether it is because you are under more pressure to win because the others have won or, as on Saturday, when a couple of clubs above us have not got a result," said Little.
"We have made a step in the right direction but there is still a long way to go. We are one point off the team above us but we have still got a lot of catching to do.
"We have games in hand but it is still going to be a difficult one."
Wrexham, who travel to Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow, have only lost once in nine outings and Little spoke about the significance of that run.
"We have only lost one game in nine so we have some impetus," said Little.
"Winning games makes such a big difference. Had we drawn it would have been a good result again and I would be saying 'we've only lost one in nine'.
"But it doesn't convince too many people as much as saying 'we've just won a game' so it is a massive result for us.
"To be bottom of the league and to have only lost one in nine quite honestly says we have been doing something right for a little while now.
"It is not going un-noticed but it showed yesterday what a massive difference a win is over a draw.
"But if we go out and draw at Wycombe tomorrow it will be a good result for us.
"The best thing as ever is to win, the second best thing is drawing.
Every point we get is a step in the right direction."
Little praised the finishing of scorers Hall and Proctor and also paid tribute to goalkeeper Gavin Ward who kept the Reds in the match with a string of excellent saves.
"We said at half-time that we were not playing well but don't get too frustrated, and keep hitting the forwards because we felt we'd get another chance," added Little.
"We felt Michael of Paul could take a chance for us. Thankfully it fell to Mike and he finished it well. I thought the two goals were well finished.
"Gavin did well and it was nice for him, coming back to somewhere he has worked before.
"He pulled off some really good saves and was in the right position for another couple of opportunities which perhaps they should have taken.
"Both Martin Foyle and I were saying to each other when Chester missed a couple that if they had gone in, there was probably only going to be one result.
"They were very much on the up and potentially could have won the game so the saves were vital for us."
