Darren Kempson wants Wrexham FC to keep top defensive record

DARRAN KEMPSON wants Wrexham to maintain the honour of having the best defensive record in the Blue Square Premier.
Wrexham have only conceded three goals in their opening five matches but that record will be put to the test when they face Salisbury City, the division's form team, at The Raymond McEnhill Stadium tomorrow (3pm).
Surprise packages Salisbury have bounced back from losing on the opening day of the season to claim top spot after winning their next four matches.
Disappointed with the early goal, Wrexham conceded in Monday's 1-1 draw at Altrincham, centre-back Kempson, on stand-by for the England C team which will play Bosnia and Herzegovina in a friendly in Sarajevo next month, is determined for the Reds to be as measly as possible at the back.
"If you look at the table, we have got the best defensive record after Cambridge conceded two on Monday," said Kempson today. "We conceded a sloppy goal at Altrincham, but you are going to concede goals.
"It is how you bounce back, but we do need to limit letting in goals as least as possible.
"I'm pleased with just three goals conceded in five games, it is very positive. We just have to keep that going.
"We just need to keep working hard there and hopefully we'll get three points at Salisbury."
Wrexham have not won any of their three away games but the Reds boast a 100 per cent record at The Racecourse after beating Stevenage Borough and Oxford United without conceding a goal.
Kempson hopes Wrexham can register their first victory on the road at Salisbury, claiming the Reds must scrap it out in order to pick up points at the likes of Altrincham and Salisbury.
"From the manager's point of view, and the players, staff and fans, it was a disappointing result on Monday," said Kempson. "It was not good enough. We made chances and did not punish them.
"It needs to be better, especially away from home. We need to go to places like Altrincham and win. It does not matter if it is scrappy, the result is what counts.
"We've looked good at home, have battered Stevenage and Oxford, and we need to continue that away.
"The lads have responded well in training. They have worked hard, and worked on every aspect of forward play.
"We are looking forward to the game, and we need to go out with a positive attitude.
"It may not be pretty but we have to grind games out if we are going to stay up there."
And Kempson has set his sights on nothing but victory ahead of the overnight trip to Salisbury.
"It is a must win game," said Kempson. "We want to win every game, home and away - that's the attitude. We won't win every game, it would be unrealistic to think that because football is not like that but that is our attitude.
"There's no reason we can't win games if we are all at it and working hard."
Wrexham, eighth in the table, have picked up eight points from a possible 15. Although he does not see it as a spectacular start, Kempson believes the division will start to take shape around Christmas time.
"I think we have made an okay start. Clubs I have been at in the past have made worse starts," added Kempson.
"You can't judge things until Christmas. Teams like Salisbury and Barrow won't be up there at Christmas.
"It's all about consistency and I think Barrow have come up, are full of confidence and have got a few results after promotion.
"Once other teams find their form they will find themselves lower down.
"The stronger teams will be up there."
