Published Date: 02 October 2008
WREXHAM FC today named ex-Liverpool and Wales star Dean Saunders as their new manager.
Club owner Geoff Moss this morning confirmed the post had been filled following the departure of Brian Little after a poor start to life outside the football league.

This morning fans said they were happy a replacement had been found so quickly.

Wrexham legend Arfon Griffiths, who had been invited along to a training match earlier on in the week with Dean Saunders, said he was pleased with the appointment.

"I'm delighted, obviously," he said.

"It's a quick appointment as well, which was crucial, because the longer it went on, the more bearing it was going to have on the squad."

Speaking about Saunders' attendance earlier in the week, Mr Griffiths went on to say: "Dean has been to matches, it's not the first time he has been to the ground. He's seen a few matches but not a lot and that's why I was asked to be there.

"It's his first step into management and he is looking forward to it."

Mr Griffiths also praised chairman Geoff Moss for his ambition in signing Saunders.

"All I know is that he has worked very hard over it. It has been in the pipeline since the weekend. I didn't think it would come off but he has worked really hard and has deserved it."

Wrexham Official Supporters' Association member Dave Davies welcomed the news: "I'm glad it's been sorted quickly and Dean Saunders has got a good record as a Wales player.

"It's going to be a difficult job but I wish him the best of luck and hope that this time they've got it right – only time will tell.

"He's got no experience of league management but that hasn't stopped other managers from being successful. All I can do is wish him the best of luck."

Carrol Clark, chairman of the Wrexham Official Supporters Association, said Dean Saunders was a man with a proven pedigree in football.

"He has been around at the club and is no stranger to Wrexham, so he will have knowledge on the playing staff there.

"Wrexham fans will get behind the manager and give him all the backing that we possibly can. I had thought the club would look for someone with experience in the lower leagues, but if that's not happening that's not happening. Dean Saunders is a high profile name."

Wrexham's AM Lesley Griffiths also welcomed the news, but said she was concerned if Saunders was to continue in his national coaching role.

She said: "I wish Dean every success. However, I am concerned he will continue in his post with Wales. Wrexham needs 100 per cent focus at this difficult time if we are to stop the slide."

Leader of Wrexham Council and Wrexham fan, Cllr Aled Roberts, said: "It's a high profile appointment if it does go ahead.

"Obviously what most fans would be concerned about is an improvement with regard the tactics and performance of the team and hopefully sufficient time to stamp his style on the side.

"But given Wrexham's rich history of playing good football hopefully that will return and return us to our rightful position higher up the league pyramid.

"A successful team is important as regards the area's intentions that we have a regional stadium in Wrexham."

I think this is an excellent appointment for the club.

I was not happy that Little had to leave and didn't think Geoff Moss could attract a "Name" in to replace him, but Dean is a good coach.

I think most of the players will still remember him as a player too which I think instills intant respect.

Well done to Geoff Moss for getting him in but Dean now has a massive job to do with the players, but fortunately it is early enough in the season to turn it around.

welcome aboard the good ship Wrexham, Deano. lets hope our chairman backs this appointment with some money so Deano can strenghen the midfield where we,ve been lacking this season. the fans now need to get behind the team and new man and play their part in getting the club back where it belongs. long live "total football", the Wrexham way.

A good signing, probably one of the best we have made, Benno for assistant, to be screaming at these over paid, unmotivated and boring current crop, I do not believe he will want to play long ball, little possession football, but we will all have to wait and see!!

I live a distance away so only pickup reports from the internet, so WELCOME Deano, but why is Brian still around. I know he was a good player, but what is his role? Cant be defence coach as most of the reports say we make school boy defensive errors. He had a go as a manager and failed so should it be his turn to go also?
