DEAN SAUNDERS was delighted that Wrexham wrapped up victory against Eastbourne Borough at The Racecourse before the closing stages of the game.
Wrexham recorded a 5-0 success against ten men Eastbourne with Marc Williams converting a hat-trick along with strikes from Jefferson Louis and Neil Taylor.
Victory meant Wrexham stretched their impressive record under Saunders to eight wins in nine league outings.
Many of those three point returns have been by narrow margins or with Wrexham coming from behind, and Saunders believed it was only a matter of time before the Reds secured a comprehensive victory.
"I felt is has been coming for a while," said Saunders. "I don't think I have sat there relaxed in the last quarter of an hour in any of the games we have been 1-0 and 2-1 up, and coming from behind against the likes of Kettering in the last two minutes.
"So it was nice to be able to sit there today and have a look at a few people.
"I had a look at Steve Abbot when he come on to see if he could do that job in a two in midfield.
"I enjoyed it, and it makes the week all worthwhile after everything we have talked about and the way they have trained.
"The lads were enjoying the game . You could see we weren't just running the clock down, they were thinking six, seven – how many goals we could get."
Saunders had accused the Reds of not being ruthless enough in front of goal in the FA Trophy win against Mansfield Town the previous week but he was delighted they atoned for that.
"Last week I said we weren't ruthless enough in front of goal. We never killed them off and today we did," said Saunders. "Some of the goals were great goals too. Neil Taylor came inside on his left foot and scored a great goal, and Marc's got a hat-trick.
"But saying that I am still not 100 per cent happy. We could have scored nine or ten goals.
"I see things that will cost us. Even at the back we played a few sloppy passes at 4-0.
"Those things will cost us. I am looking for perfection but it is never going to happen and we just have to keep try improving."
Wrexham finally broke Eastbourne down by netting the opening goal a minute before half-time.
After stretching the lead to 3-0 by the 65th minute, the final two goals came in injury time as Wrexham kept pressing to the end, and Saunders spoke about his players' superior fitness levels.
"I know that we are fitter than the opposition we are playing against," said Saunders. "All the players are fitter than them, and we have got more than enough talent on the pitch so sooner later, as we showed again today, we end up running all over teams in the last half hour.
"The players believe that. There were no silly mistakes today, all we have to do is make sure we don't give games up.
"They got a few headers in which I wasn't happy about but we never let them score from a set-piece or a flick on."
Saunders added: "All week I felt we were going to play well. They have trained very well and I keep telling the players they are improving.
"Eastbourne are not a bad team, but because we didn't allow them to pick their heads up and play a ball forward right from the kick-off, we made them look very ordinary.
"We ended up winning the game with sheer effort. The goals were a bonus but I look at the effort and the way we pressed them, and the way we stopped them hitting balls forward."
Despite the victory, Wrexham remain seventh in the table after the majority of the sides above them in the table also won, but Saunders is not concerned about that and is just focussed on Wrexham: "The teams above us have won again but they won't keep winning," he added.
"I am not frustrated, they won't keep winning – simple as that. We have them in our sights and they are all looking over their shoulders.
"I said a few games back that we have sent a message out. And we have sent a message out that a point at Wrexham is really good. That is half the battle, teams will come looking for a point.
"We will just keep on doing our job.
"We have got enough players here and hopefully over the Christmas period we can claw some points back."
