WREXHAM were today given a double dose of good news.
Chairman Geoff Moss has stressed that Reds' boss Dean Saunders will not leave the club after he was linked with the vacant manager's job at Derby County, one of the former Welsh international striker's former clubs.

And the other good news is that runaway Blue Square Premier leaders Burton Albion, who hold a 13 point lead at the top, may allow boss Nigel Clough to become the new manager at Derby after Paul Jewell left the Championship outfit last month.

Moss insists Saunders, who has lost only one of 11 league matches since taking charge of Wrexham, will not be leaving and wants to help the Reds' regain their place in the Football League.

"Dean is not going anywhere," said Moss. "He told me he is staying at Wrexham as he has a job to do here by getting us back in the Football League.

"I didn't need any other reassurances than Dean's word because he is a good friend.

"He's a passionate Welshman and wants to achieve things at Wrexham."

Wrexham have won eight of their 11 matches under Saunders who was brought in as manager at the start of October.

Five of those wins came in his first five matches at the helm, meaning Saunders enjoyed the most successful start to a managerial stint at The Racecourse.

Meanwhile, Derby chairman of football Adam Pearson has confirmed he has contacted Burton about the possibility of Clough becoming the club's new manager.

Clough, whose late father Brian managed Derby between 1967 and 1973 and led them to the old Division One title in 1972, has been heavily tipped to make the short switch to Pride Park to fill the Rams' vacant managerial post after Paul Jewell resigned a week ago.

Clough junior has impressed in his first job as a manager. Having taken charge 10 years ago with Burton in the Southern League, he is on course to earn the Brewers promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history.

Burton are top of the Blue Square Premier, with a huge cushion between them and nearest rivals Histon which could be extended to 16 points tonight if Clough's side win against Torquay United.

Pearson wants to make an appointment within the next 10 days and has admitted that Clough is on the club's "very small radar".

"Certainly Nigel has got lots of attributes you look for in a manager and I have spoken to (Burton chairman) Ben Robinson about him," Pearson said.

"But I speak to him often anyway because of the close connection between the two clubs. We did have a chat about Nigel but that is as far as it has gone.

"There are certainly other candidates on our shortlist but he is one who is on our very small radar."

One of the other names in the frame for the Pride Park post in former Wrexham captain Darren Ferguson, who is earning rave reviews in in first management role at Peterborough.
