THE LURE of playing against the likes of Leeds United in front of bumper crowds was a major influence in Matty Done joining Hereford United.
The 19-year-old winger, who turns 20 on Sunday, has turned down the offer of a new contract at Wrexham and signed a two-year deal at League One outfit at Hereford.

Although Done was out of contract this summer at The Racecourse, Wrexham will receive training compensation because he is under 24, but the two clubs have agreed on an undisclosed fee and the switch has been made with immediate effect.

Hereford experienced differing fortunes to Wrexham to last season, winning automatic promotion to League One as the Reds were relegated to the Blue Square Premier.

And it is the chance to play on the big stage against the likes of Leeds that prompted Oswestry-born Done to leave for Edgar Street.

"It is going to be a lot different than staying at Wrexham," said Done today. "I want to get into the team early on, try and stay there and obviously enjoy it.

"Playing at places like Elland Road and the Walkers Stadium in from of 30,000 fans is going to be a new experience, something every player wants to do regularly.

"I have had the taste of the big stage at Derby, Birmingham and Sheffield Wednesday with Wrexham and you just want more. I am no different to anybody. You improve your game with the bigger crowd, stadium and atmosphere – it brings the best out of you.

"I can't wait for training to start and for the season to get under way."

Hereford manager Graham Turner expressed an interest in signing Done during the January transfer window but the winger decided to stay and help the Reds in their unsuccessful battle against relegation.

Done wanted to continue playing in the Football League and the desire shown by Turner for Hereford to keep progressing meant the Bulls were his preferred choice although other clubs were interested.

"I never doubted I would stay in January," said Done. "There was the opportunity to go but I wanted to stay and help Wrexham stay up.

Unfortunately we did not.

"But a lot has changed since January. Obviously Hereford have gone up and Wrexham have gone down.

"It was a tough decision in the end to leave Wrexham.

"It's been quiet for five weeks but suddenly the last week was very busy. I had a few other offers from League One but the big factor was Graham Turner.

"He came after me in January so obviously knew about me and it meant a lot that he came back for me. I respect that and decided to go.

"Graham Turner sold the club to me. He has ambitions, like me, to get to the highest level."

Done, a product of the Centre of Excellence, has been at Wrexham since the age of eight.

A dream first-team debut in a pre-season friendly against Liverpool followed days after his 16th birthday, and his first competitive game for the Reds came 12 months later against Doncaster in August 2005.

Done was offered his first professional contract by Denis Smith and went on to make 41 league starts for Wrexham, and another 23 substitute appearances, scoring once, and he also won the Young Player of the Year award in 2007.

But Done admits that after two successive relegation battles, his future lay elsewhere.

"It seems ages ago that I made my debut but I have enjoyed every minute playing for Wrexham," said Done.

"Unfortunately, for the last two years, all I have known as a young pro is relegation battles which is not the best.

"As a kid, there is enough pressure on you coming into the first team, and every game there has been more pressure.

"A lot of youngsters have come into the side and it soon catches up with you.

"It's been a tough two seasons and relegation did not help. I am sure this is the right decision."

After 11 years at the club, Done paid tribute to the coaches who helped his career progress and he hopes Wrexham can win immediate promotion back to the Football League.

"I've been at Wrexham a long time – it is all I have ever known," added Done. "I have enjoyed my time at the club and have got a lot of respect for people here.

"I've made some great mates and learnt a lot from the coaches – especially Steve Weaver, Joey Jones and Steve Cooper.

"They have been a pleasure to work with and I have got a lot to thank them for.

"I want to thank all the staff involved at the club, and wish the lads, and Wrexham, all the best next season.

"I'm sure they will come straight back up and that Brian Little, Martin Foyle and Brian Carey will do a good job.

"I would also like to thank the fans who have been great to me."

The cash brought in by Done's exit will enable Little to make more new signings, with winger Ricky Shakes, released by Brentford, one of the players he is interested in.

Although he was hoping to keep Done, the move will also free up some of Little's wage budget.
