GARETH EVANS today admitted his recall to the Wrexham squad had come as a shock.
Centre-back Evans was named as a substitute against Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park on Tuesday and played the entire second half in Wrexham's 2-1 defeat.

The 21-year-old was last included in a Wrexham squad for the visit of Stockport County on December 29 – having started the previous match against Rochdale on Boxing Day.

And having spent most of February on loan at Blue Squad North outfit Tamworth, Evans said he was taken aback when told he was in the squad for the trip to promotion challengers Wycombe.

"I was delighted to be in the squad but it came as a bit of a surprise," said Evans today.

"It has been quite some time since I was last involved with the first team, especially with the lads doing well and having lost just once before Tuesday, and the last time I was in the squad was late in December.

"I had just served a four match ban but I have been back training at Wrexham and felt I've been doing okay so I was pleased to be back in.
"I was happy to make the bench but I was surprised to be coming on at half-time."

Evans, along with left-back Neil Taylor, was brought on for the start of the second half with Wrexham trailing 2-0.

Centre-backs Richard Hope and Phil Bolland were withdrawn in a shock move, with manager Brian Little saying the changes were made as the pair had both been booked and that he needed to try something different following a lacklustre first half.

Although pleased with his performance, Evans – brought on to partner Mike Williams at the heart of defence – was disappointed Wrexham did not get at least a draw having dominating the second half and back in the contest following leading scorer Michael Proctor's 53rd minute goal.

"To come on at half-time was good for me," said Evans.

"We were not doing too well but I was still surprised the gaffer took both Richard and Phil off, although they had both been booked and we could not afford a sending off. It was common sense.

"Sometimes you need that break and hopefully I did my chances no harm.
"From a personal point of view, I was happy with how it went. Some clearances could have been longer, but that's being critical, and I don't think it could have gone much better for me.

"But I would take a bad performance if it meant we come back to draw or win.

"There were no excuses how we played first half. Everyone knew we had not played well.

"I thought we were very unfortunate not to get anything because I thought we deserved at least a point. Second half we had a lot of scoring chances."

Evans' loan spell at Tamworth was cut short after he collected a second red card of the season, meaning he incurred a four match ban, but the defender enjoyed his spell with the Lambs.

"It was good to get some games at Tamworth rather than staying to play in the reserves.

"It was going really well until my last game which we lost 5-0 and I was sent off. We were five-down after 23 minutes but it was a freak result.

"We were unbeaten in the month I was there apart from that one game, and we also beat Stafford from a higher division in the cup.

"I benefited from playing those matches as I feel sharper, and it gave me some confidence.

"Hopefully I took my chance against Wycombe and, fingers crossed, I am involved and I have done enough to stay in the squad.

"If not, I will just get my head down in training, go again and hopefully be back in soon."
