SHAUN WHALLEY is setting his sights high with Wrexham.
Whalley scored the third goal in Wrexham's 5-0 opening day victory against Stevenage Borough and the striker, who joined Wrexham in the summer after being released by Accrington Stanley, is targetting promotion.

"As I have always said, we are looking for promotion this season," said Whalley.

"I would not have signed otherwise.

"If we keep performing like that I don't see why we can't even win the league."

But Whalley was not getting too carried away after beating much fancied Stevenage.

"It is an absolutely fantastic result," said Whalley.

"Starting like that against one of the fancied teams is unbelieveable.

"None of us expected it but I don't see why we can't carry it on from here now, and we are all looking forward to it.

"But no-one is getting carried away. It was the first game of the season and everyone is a bit rusty, but to win 5-0 against one of the favourites is a really good result.

"We expect to push on from here."

Whalley added to the three goals he scored in pre-season and he was delighted to have found the back of the next on his competitive debut for Wrexham.

"The icing on the cake was the goal," added Whalley.

"I was not really happy with my performance. It was okay but I am my harshest critic.

"I am made up with the goal. It is nice to score but as long as the team is winning and playing like, that is the main thing and I am delighted.

"That's four in three games - I don't count Crewe because I only played one half!

"I am looking for goals this season.

"I have not really scored that many lately but that is only because I have been playing on the wing.

"Hopefully I can have a good season here."
