BRIAN LITTLE believes that Wrexham's 5-0 opening day victory against Stevenage Borough was a flattering scoreline.
Wrexham were matched by title favourites Stevenage at The Racecourse in the first half but led at the break thanks to a goal from newly appointed captain Tom Kearney.

The second goal arrived on 66 minutes and Wrexham added three more strikes in the final 20 minutes, and Little was delighted with the final outcome.

"The way the game went, the last bit was a massive bonus to us," said Little.

"From my point of view, I never felt comfortable in the first half at all. We needed that second goal to go in.

"It is a fantastic result and the last half an hour has been very much us but for 60 minutes they were quite possibly the better side.

"It was nice because you put two subs on (Christian Smith and Marc Williams) and they score as well but it is too early to get carried away.

"I am absolutely delighted with the result but totally aware that for 60 minutes they were a real test to us.

"I still thought we created the better chances even in that initial period but their passing and control was pretty good and credit to them for that.

"At the moment I would not say it is anything we should think is going to be a true reflection on how games are going to be throughout the season, but a great day."

Little acknowledged that Stevenage, installed as the pre-season favourites for promotion, put up a valiant fight.

"It is a great result. Early analysis would say at 1-0 they played some decent football, were well in the game if not the better side," said Little.

"Even at 2-0 they weren't out of it and I thought they were a decent side.

"I don't think the 5-0 ultimately is a reflection on them as a team. I thought they were better than that.

"You can be 2-0 up and settle for it or you can do what they did and have a real go at us.

"Without Gavin Ward's saves they might have got back in it.

"I heard their manager at 3-0 say 'come on fellas we can still get back in this, so credit to them for that.

"Their attitude was brilliant and we had to hang in there."

Stevenage were reduced to 10 men on the hour mark when Steve Morison was shown a straight red card after clashing with Darran Kempson.

But numbers were even nine minutes later when Wrexham midfielder Levi Mackin was shown a second yellow card after lunging in on Ronnie Henry.

And Little had no complaints with referee David Coote's decisions.

"The sendings off were not really healthy for either side," added Little.

"I didn't see anything with their lad so I haven't got a clue what went on there, but Darran has got a bit of a bruise on his cheekbone or chin so something has obviously happened.

"Levi just lunged at the lad but he got the ball. We have tried to say to people that you can't do that this first weekend until everyone knows what is going on.

"He did lunge and at the time I cringed a bit.

"We were on tenterhooks all game getting used to players not over committing themselves."

- Buckley and District Reds are holding their next meeting on Wednesday, at Buckley Cricket Club, starting 8pm, and non members are welcome to join on the night.

Wrexham's summer signing Kyle Critchell will be the special guest.
