Little pleased with the shape of his squad

BRIAN LITTLE is delighted to have healthy competition for places in his squad.
Wrexham drew 0-0 against Championship outfit Blackpool at The Racecourse in Saturday's encounter and Little once again fielded all of his fit outfield players.

In total 21 players were used, including latest acquisition, centre-back Darran Kempson, who joined from Shrewsbury Town on Thursday.

And Little is pleased with how his squad have responded so far in pre-season.

"I think the attitude of everybody is good," said Little today.

"Competition for places is there and the new lads have bedded in quite well which is fine, but some of the other fellows have knuckled down as well.

"So far so good. It seems strange not getting carried away but it is nice not to be losing games, and it is nice to be competitive.

"Everyone is enthusiastic, but we haven't picked that first team yet! Everybody is working hard to get in there and I think that is the most important thing."

Wrexham have only scored once in four friendly matches – two of which have been played behind closed doors – but Little is happy with how his side have performed against teams from higher divisions.

"I am not unhappy with that," said Little.

"We had one clear chance which Marc Williams is kicking himself with, but there are plenty of things that entertained me.

"It is always nice if you can score three or four goals but we have played teams from the Championship and it's not really going to happen on a regular basis.

"If it does it is a massive bonus. It is the fitness work and how we work as a team trying to get the ball back and then try to counter attack which is what we have tried to base our training on at the moment."

Little stressed than the emphasis is on a mean defence and the ability to break forward on the counter attack at every opportunity.

"We are trying to push people to work and be brave on the counter attack," said Little.

"We are working on defending but we are trying to work on being brave in possession when we have got it.

"At times, more so in the second half, we counter attacked with good pace so I was quite pleased with that.

"We have played teams who have got players who have scored at the highest level but in each of the games, we have defended very well.

"We are now playing with a four but we are working very hard on the four players ahead of them to defend.

"We are asking them to be a little bit deeper than perhaps some people play, and then we go from there with the counter attack.

"We are asking for a lot of work off people, that is why we are stressing so much about the fitness levels, and get to a level we can carry through to the season."

Little added: "We are pleased with certain things.

"We did quite well again and put a bit of pressure on them in the second half and overall everyone has got out of the game what we wanted, fitness being the top of the tree."
