BRIAN LITTLE was disappointed Wrexham that failed to narrow the gap on the teams above them at the weekend.
Basement side Wrexham slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Brentford on Saturday, a result which now leaves the Reds six points away from safety – but with games in hand.

Three of the bottom four all lost, with just Notts County improving their cause by beating Rochdale.

And Wrexham boss Little was unhappy that Wrexham could not capitalise on Macclesfield's defeat which came 24 hours before the Reds' faced Brentford.

"We saw ourselves six points behind the likes of Macclesfield with four games in hand and you think, 'hang on, that's not too bad'," said Little. "But we needed to win at Brentford to put them under pressure.

"I think it's alright having four games in hand but you have really got to feel you can win them.

"And at the moment, performances like that won't win us anything.
"You get good days and bad days in this business but that was a poor day for us."

Wrexham trailed to first half Ricky Shakes opener and the winger scored his, and Brentford's, second goal with nine minutes remaining at a windy Griffin Park.

Little admitted that conditions had not been ideal and felt that the opening goal would prove to be decisive: "I didn't think there was much between the sides," he said. "I don't think either side could play in the conditions and both teams reverted to getting the ball forward, and trying to feed off little mistakes.

"And they took advantage of two, we took advantage of none. We gave away two very sloppy goals.

"It could have gone either way and their first goal was very decisive.
"We had three or four half chances ourselves which didn't go in, and it was a day where nothing happened for us.

"We were poor and we are disappointed with that."

Having seen Wrexham seal a 2-1 home victory against Bury the previous weekend, Little stuck with a 4-4-2 formation, but admitted that Wrexham's game plan at Brentford did not work.

"For a long time we have been playing with three centre-backs and we have been strong," said Little. "It is crazy really because afterwards we said our mentality in recent games to give nothing away has actually seen us win one or two, and we looked better.

"Today we came to Brentford trying to play 4-4-2 to try and get at them and it just didn't happen.

"It is pretty irritating to say the least. Through the game our mentality is about winning and yet we seemed to be further away from winning than what we genuinely wanted to be.

"Perhaps it doesn't suit us with the current set-up away from home. Everybody, including myself, is aware of how important it is to win games. We did well last week playing this at home, today it just didn't work.

"The two performances were poles apart but at least at home, I am quite convinced we can play this way."

Wrexham are back in action against fifth from bottom Dagenham and Redbridge at The Racecourse today (3pm) in the first of 10 remaining matches in their battle to beat the drop and Little is looking for an improvement against the Daggers.

"We will have to dust ourselves down," he added. "We have got a game on Monday and we will go flat out to win that. We have still got ten games to go and we will try very hard to stay up.

"But we need to do better, and we are all know that. Nobody needs to tell us."

Wrexham are without defender Mike Williams who has been called up for Wales under 21's European Championship qualifier in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday.
