MARK GRIFFITHS - Reds need a bit of rattle and roll against Shakers

The voice of The Racecourse - Eifion Williams' bizarre winner against Bury last December was a rare ray of sunlight against The Shakers in recent years, as it brought only our second win in eight games against them.
Furthermore, we haven't beaten them at The Racecourse since our game on September 11, 2001 controversially went ahead and Lee Trundle scored the spectacular only goal six minutes from the end.

Not that Bury tend to run riot when they visit North Wales; they've only won here once, in March 2001 when ex-Dragon Jon Newby scored an injury time winner.

The pattern is for stalemates as our last two clashes at The Racecourse were draws and the game has only yielded more than two goals once since October 1992!

Not that last season's clash was boring by any stretch of the imagination.

In front of a bumper crowd attracted by the campaign to preserve our Football League status, Lee McEvilly gave us a half time lead but the odds were stacked against Brian Carey's side hanging on to all three points when both Ryan Valentine and Chris Llewellyn were sent off.

However, the nine men held on heroically, with forgotten man Robbie Garrett embarking on his famous run through the entire Bury defence only to miss the target once he was clear. Cruelly The Dragons were not to hold on for a memorable win as Glynn Hurst equalised in injury time.

Our best result against Bury came back in October 1992 when we beat them 4-2, Gary Bennett hitting the only hat trick in the fixture's history.

Bennett is equal top of the list of Wrexham scorers against Bury with five goals, alongside Graham Whittle. Behind them on three goals are Hector Sam, Andy Edwards and Brian Tinnion.

Speaking of goal-scoring feats, Michael Proctor has scored in the last three matches, the first time a Wrexham player has hit the net in three consecutive games since McEvilly last March – one of those goals was the aforementioned strike against Bury.

Proctor has been a key part of what success Wrexham have had this season. Wrexham have only scored two goals in a game seven times this season, and Proctor scored in six of them! In fact he got eight of our 14 goals in those games.

Jeff Whitley's injury will necessitate a bit of reorganisation tomorrow, quite apart from any tactical tinkering Brian Little might have in mind, much as he might hanker for a bit of stability.

Here's a sign of how unsettled Wrexham have been over the last couple of years; eight of our players made their derby debuts last Sunday, meaning that in our last five games against Chester we've used 43 different players!

If you feel like clutching at straws, we've won every game we've played under the auspices of tomorrow's referee, Keith Stroud, while Bury have lost each time he's been in charge of them.

He's only reffed us once and them three times, but any port in a storm, eh?
