WREXHAM'S Racecourse Ground is gearing up for an influx of TV cameras next month.
Setanta Sports will be screening live Wrexham's Blue Square Premier clash with Oxford United on Thursday, August 21 and that's just 24 hours after Sky Sports roll into town for Brian Flynn's Welsh under 21s showdown with Romania.

"It will be a bit of a rush getting one camera crew out and one camera crew in but we'll manage," said football secretary Geraint Parry, who also revealed he is trying to re-arrange the club's away fixture at Rushden and Diamonds on August 16.

The Reds travel to Rushden less than 48 hours after that live game with Oxford.

"Football League rules were clear that you didn't play games within 48 hours," said Parry. "We're making investigations into what can be done about it. Rushden don't want to put the game back to the Sunday but we feel that if we say yes then a precedent will be set."

The only other game in Wrexham's new set of league fixtures that could be a doubt is the home game with Histon on October 11.

"Wales are playing Leichtenstein in a World Cup qualifier at The Millennium Stadium that day," added Parry. "So we may have to change that one."

Hoping to be involved in the squad for Wrexham's first games in the Blue Square Premier is young Reds goalkeeper Chris Maxwell.

The St Asaph born goalkeeper, a product of the club's youth system, was offered his first professional contract by manager Brian Little and he readily accepted the one-year deal.

Maxwell, aged 17, could find himself as back-up to first choice shot-stopper Gavin Ward as Anthony Williams has been placed on the transfer list by Little.

It remains to be seen whether Little will sign another goalkeeper but Maxwell is just hoping to continue his development next term.

"I just want to play as many games as possible, and get as much experience as I can," said Maxwell today. "I want to keep improving and make the step up.

"I would love to play for the first team but that is not my decision.

"The gaffer could bring in another goalkeeper, and whether I go out on loan, or play for the reserves, I just want to play as much as I can, and get more experience under my belt.

"But it would be brilliant to play for the first team. I want to play at the highest level I can this season. Hopefully I am in the manager's thoughts and may even play in pre-season.

"It is an exciting time – make or break. I suppose I have got a year to prove myself, and I hope to do that."

Maxwell, who has been with Wrexham since the age of 10, was delighted to be offered a contract, although the decision to give Maxwell a contract in effect meant that Michael Jones was released.

"I was chuffed to bits to be offered a deal," said Maxwell. "A lot of my family are from the Wrexham area and they, and my friends, were really pleased for me.

"It is good that the manager has got faith in me, especially as Wrexham are out of the Football League and he is looking for experience, and I hope to repay him if I get my chance.

"I felt as though I worked hard so I was pleased to get my reward at the end of the season. I just want to push on now and continue to work hard.

"It was a shock to see Michael go. I have been with him for eight years at Wrexham so it will be weird not having him around the place.

"But that is the football, and the luck of the draw. I just have to make sure I take my chance if and when it comes."

Maxwell has been given the number 27 shirt after Wrexham released their squad numbers for the new season.

The full squad number list is:1 Gavin Ward, 2 Kyle Critchell, 3 Carl Tremarco, 5 Steve Evans, 6 Nat Brown, 7 Wes Baynes, 8 Simon Brown, 9 Jefferson Louis, 10 Shaun Whalley, 11 Neil Taylor, 12 Levi Mackin, 14 Tom Kearney, 15 Mike Williams, 16 Silvio Spann, 17 Simon Spender, 18 Michael Proctor, 19 Andy Fleming, 20 Shaun Pejic, 21 Marc Williams, 22 Conall Murtagh, 23 Sam Aiston, 24 Gareth Evans, 26 Anthony Williams, 27 Chris Maxwell, 28 Chris Marriott.
