MICHAEL PROCTOR would sacrifice scoring any more goals this season if it means Wrexham avoid relegation from League Two.

>>SLIDESHOW: Wrexham 1 - 1 Mansfield Town

Striker Proctor took his tally for the season to nine goals – eight have come in the league – with the equaliser in Saturday's 1-1 draw against fellow strugglers Mansfield Town at The Racecourse.

And although Wrexham's leading scorer hopes more goals will follow in the crucial 14-game run-in, he said the priority for the bottom of the table Reds, who have lost once in the last eight matches, is to reach safety.

"I was pleased to get a goal. Before a game, that is what any striker wants to do," said Proctor today.

"I don't set any target, although I now want to get into double figures.

"But it is more important for the team to be picking up points, and it doesn't matter who scores if we do that. If I don't score another goal this season and we keep picking up enough points to stay up, I won't mind.

"Hopefully I get a lot more goals, and those goals turn out to be important for Wrexham."

Having made eight consecutive substitute appearances, Proctor was handed his first start since the beginning of January against Mansfield at the weekend and the 27-year-old was delighted to regain his place in the team.

Pleased to have contributed with a goal from a second half free-kick, Proctor admitted it was a below par performance and he said there has to be an improvement in Sunday's derby against Chester City at The Deva Stadium.

"I couldn't have any complaints the way the lads have been playing lately, getting points when we were not expected to," said Proctor.

"Obviously you want to start games and I was delighted with that.

"I've spoken to the gaffer a few times recently pestering him to play me.

"I was happy to get back in, although I was disappointed with the overall performance and result.

"The game did not seem to get going and we did not play until they scored. We were better after that and got at them, but it was disappointing we took so long to start. We know we can do better.

"We were happy with a point in the end because we did not play well and we have to do better against Chester."

Wrexham go into the derby six points away from safety although they do have games in hand on the four sides immediately above them in the table.

And Proctor acknowledged the importance of the clash against arch-rivals City who sacked manager Bobby Williamson at the weekend after a disastrous run which has brought just one win in 14 outings.

"It is a massive game on Sunday and I can't wait for it," said Proctor.

"It would be a big game anyway and it is a derby, but there's an added incentive because we need points.

"We know how important the game is and I, like all the lads, am really looking forward to it.

"These are the types of games you want to be involved in. I'd like to keep my place and hopefully I start again.

"Hopefully we get the result we need and the Wrexham fans go home happy."

Proctor said the mood in the Wrexham camp is as upbeat as ever and there is still a belief the Reds will avoid the drop: "The team spirit has been brilliant and we still believe we can play better and confident we can get out of trouble.

"But there is no point talking about it, we have to do out and do it.
"Performances have been good and we are looking more solid at the back but we have to start scoring more goals, and picking up more points.

"We've got some big games coming up and we've got to create more opportunities and take those chances when they come."

Little's first game in charge of Wrexham last November was the visit of Chester to The Racecourse in the corresponding fixture.

Proctor scored both the Reds' goals in the 2-2 draw and he added: "It was great to score two goals and a repeat of that would be nice on Sunday."

- Tonight's Wrexham reserves' Pontin's League match at Manchester City has been postponed.
