New Year's Day blow for Reds

GEOFF MOSS believes that the postponement of Wrexham's lucrative New Year's Day fixture against Barrow at The Racecourse will cost the club at least £30,000.
Barrow have requested that the game be played at a future date because of their involvement in the FA Cup two days after their trip to Wrexham.

The Conference made the ruling in April that matches can be called off if anyone is involved in the FA Cup which will be at its third round stage on Saturday, January 3.

Only Blue Square Premier matches are scheduled for New Year's Day and Barrow want the same time to prepare for their cup tie as opponents Middlesbrough, who play their last match before the clash on December 29.

Ironically, Wrexham will take on Barrow at Holker Street on Boxing Day and a request was made to reverse that fixture to compensate the loss of the Reds' home game on January 1 but that was turned down.

And chairman Moss said the postponement of the match on such a key date was a big disappointment.

"Traditionally, it is a big fixture on New Year's Day and as the team is improving, had we got a bit higher up the table then you are looking at a crowd in excess of 5,000," said Moss today. "And there is no Everton or Liverpool fixture that day.

"We will now probably get a gate of around 3,000 on a cold Tuesday in February. It is a big difference income wise.

"It will probably cost us a net income of over £30,000 when you take into account gate receipts and other stadium income. And that is minimum.

"At a time when all income – not just in football – is crucial, a New Year's Day game being called off is extremely disappointing. A game on that day gives you increased income so it is a big financial blow losing this sort of game."

Wrexham have not had a home game since November 1 and of their 19 league matches played so far this season, only eight have been played at The Racecourse.

December is a more fruitful month for the Reds with three league matches – starting with the visit of Kettering on Saturday – and two cup matches taking place at The Racecourse.

But the cancellation of the money-spinning clash with Barrow also means it is one game less that manager Dean Saunders' six loan signings will be able to play in during their stay.

"I am delighted for Barrow but they have a game in the FA Cup so they are getting some income," said Moss. "Running a club you need on average three home games a month so it does not half squeeze your cash flow with no home games.

"A strong squad of loan players have been brought in to cope this busy Christmas period so it is disappointing when games are off, especially with the team doing so well under Dean."

Moss is delighted with the impact Saunders has had since being unveiled as manager on September 25.

Seventh place Wrexham have won six of their seven league matches under Saunders and are just three points away from the play-offs with games in hand on all but one of the sides above them.

And Moss is glad that he was able to persuade Saunders to take charge of the Reds: "I think it is plain to see, not only Dean's enthusiasm and passion he has brought to the job, but the improvement in style of football we are playing," he said.

"Even though we lost that one game at Kidderminster, people walked away saying 'didn't we play well'.

"What else can I say after someone has won six out of seven games? He is a winner. I never had any doubt about Dean, it was just a matter of being able to persuade him to come.

"And he told me he is really happy with his team (assistants Brian Carey and Terry Darracott).

"We are pleased with Dean and we need fans to get behind him and give him their support to take us further up the league."

Moss also revealed that re-development plans for The Racecourse will be submitted in the next few days.

"All plans have been drawn up on The Racecourse, which looks super and which we feel will be satisfactory to everybody, and the planning application will be submitted in the next few days," added Moss.

"The support which we have had from Wrexham County Borough Council has been excellent. They have gone out of their way to help us.

"The success of this development secures the long term future of The Racecourse and the football club.

"Once it is approved, it will leave the club in a secure position."
