JEFFERSON LOUIS knows he can't rest on his laurels with Dean Saunders as his manager.
Wrexham take on Northwich Victoria at The Marston's Arena tonight (7.45pm) with leading scorer Louis hoping to add to his tally.

But although Louis has grabbed 11 goals in all competitions this season for the Reds, the experienced striker knows there can be no let-up in his performances under Saunders who he continually learning from.

"The gaffer is keeping me on my toes," said Louis today. "He is always telling me to do the right things and to keep working hard in training.

"The gaffer has told me not to be complacent and he is on my case every day. He is pushing me and that is good for me.

"In the past I have been in the comfort zone but his management skills are really good.

"I can't argue back. I used to look up to him when I was young and he was playing in the Premiership.

"You have to listen if you want to improve your game, and take his advice on board because I can still learn things off him."

Louis, with ten goals in the Blue Square Premier, is only one behind the division's joint leading scorers – Burton Albion's Greg Pearson and Steve Morison of Stevenage Borough – who have both struck 11 times in the league.

But with only 19 games gone, Louis refuses to set a goal target for the season: "I am pleased with 11 goals in total which is a good return, and I'm only one goal behind the leading scorer in the league," he said.

"But I have said since day one that I don't set myself a target. We are not even half way through the season yet, I'm just taking every game as it comes. I just want to keep it going and to be positive."

Strike partner Marc Williams has also been finding the back of the net with regularity since being given a run in the side under Saunders, and the Wales under 21 international has weighed in with eight goals in total – seven coming in the league.

Not for the first time since Saunders took charge, Louis and Williams both scored in the same match on Saturday as Wrexham ran out 2-1 winners at Stevenage Borough.

And Louis is pleased with how the partnership has developed: "The goals are coming and I have struck up a good combination with Marc," he added.

"We are not trying to beat each other. Marc likes my game and I like his game, and we want to keep it going."

Victory against Stevenage at the weekend means seventh place Wrexham have picked up six league wins in seven outings under Saunders.

Another three point return tonight against Northwich would take Wrexham into a play-off berth, and Louis is looking for the Reds to continue their excellent run of form against a Vics side who have lost their last three home matches in the league and are third from bottom in the table.

"The most important thing is the team," added Louis.

"Six wins in seven games is a good record and we want to build on that tonight. Hopefully I can get a goal there as well.

"I'm enjoying it here and everyone is upbeat."

- A pitch inspection was planned at The Marston's Arena for 1pm today.
