Plenty still to do says Taylor

WREXHAM skipper Neil Taylor remains cautious after seeing the Reds close the gap on the leading pack following their excellent recent run.
A run of five consecutive league victories under Dean Saunders, who has set a new club record for best winning start to a managerial stint at The Racecourse, has left Wrexham just seven points away from new leaders Torquay United with two games in hand.

Two victories would leave Wrexham bang on the tails of the frontrunners but Taylor knows there is plenty of work to be done yet.

"We are doing alright," said Taylor today. "I was looking at the table thinking. 'if we win that and do that'.

"But you just have to take it a game at a time. We have done well to get where we are and just need to win our games in hand to be up there at the top.

"The games in hand will be key games.

"I never like having games in hand. There is nothing better than having points on the board and seeing the other teams fall short.

"But we have them in hand and it is a chance to get up near the top."

Wrexham will bid to win their sixth match in a row when they take on fifth place Kidderminster Harriers at Aggborough on Saturday, and with Wrexham also due to face the likes of Stevenage Borough and Kettering in the coming weeks, Taylor knows the Reds can expect some tricky matches.

"We have got some tough games coming up and these will be testers," added Taylor. "We have not really played any of the teams right up there lately, especially away.

"If we can get the results it will put us in a really good position. We are looking to kick on at Kidderminster."

Taylor played for the Wales semi-professional team which lost 1-0 against Finland in an international at Llanelli.

The under 23 Welsh team featured a mix of players who ply their trade in the Blue Square Premier and Welsh Premier League, and Taylor complimented the talent on display from the country's non-league.

"Finland don't have an under 23 side so it was their under 21s which qualified for the European Championships, and they were a good team," said Taylor.

"It was a good game. We lost 1-0 but we only conceded because of a miss-hap. We definitely deserved something out of it.

"There are a lot of good non-league players in Wales which really opened my eyes considering we are only a small country.

"I was impressed with the standard, especially when you consider some of them maybe only train once a week, and have to get up for work early."

As well as being handed the captaincy, Taylor was also an ever-present under Saunders until Saturday's victory at Weymouth where he was rested.

And with such a big squad at Saunders' disposal – there are more than 30 players available to the Reds' boss – Taylor accepts there will be changes from match to match.

"We have got a massive squad at the moment and the gaffer may decide to go to some places and play something different, as some teams may want to lump it or play with pace," said Taylor.

"We had a chat about it and he explained everything. Fair enough, these things happen.

"No-one wants to be rested, especially me because I am young and energetic. I am sure I will be able to get back in."

Saunders has been eager to add to his squad with the addition of a number of loan signings, while centre-back Ashley Westwood has extended his short-term deal until the end of the season.

After receiving the necessary clearance, Cameroon international striker Patrick Suffo has also completed his move, penning a short-term deal, and he will be available at Kidderminster.

And Taylor stressed the need for players to keep performing well with plenty of competition for places.

"The gaffer has made it clear to everyone that if anyone is not doing it, he will take them out," added Taylor. "He is more than happy to bring in loan players if players aren't doing their job.

"But the gaffer has also shown that if you are doing your job, he will look after you."

Assistant manager Terry Darracott believes Taylor was in need of a break at Weymouth but said no player was immune – for whatever reason – from being left out of the side.

"We just decided to change the team," said Darracott. "Neil has done well since we have been here but we just thought he could do with a rest on Saturday.

"Neil's attitude has been fantastic and I am sure he will benefit from the rest.

"There has to be a reason, but they all come under the category that we can change it at some time. Everyone is in the same boat.

"We felt Neil and Levi Mackin would benefit from having a rest.

"Neil has been away with Wales but the response in training from Levi to being left out has been fantastic, exactly what we wanted it to be."

- Supporters have got the opportunity to meet the Wrexham players at the club shop on Mold Road on Thursday, November 27, from 4.30-6pm.

Jefferson Louis, Kyle Critchell, Silvio Spann, Steve Evans and Patrick Suffo will be present, and there will also be price reductions on all tracksuits.
