Brian Little today set his sights on a promotion bid with Wrexham this season.
Wrexham kick-off their Blue Square Premier campaign tomorrow when they entertain Stevenage Borough – another side tipped to be challenging at the top of the table – at The Racecourse tomorrow (3pm).

Little, a massive Superbikes fan, is aiming to go full throttle to turn around Wrexham's fortunes by leading the club to bigger and better things.

He is also determined for his new-look Reds to start heading in the right direction by challenging at the top of the table.

"When you look back at teams who have gone up from this division, they very rarely go straight back down," said Little, who made seven new signings over the summer and has also recruited trailist Christian Smith until the end of August.

"They hold their own, and teams like Carlisle and Doncaster have gone up again.

"The platform this division gives some clubs is fabulous.

"I hope this club has hit the bottom and we can now keep progressing. I am rebuilding and I hope we get there quickly.

"I'm just starting it off but I am pleased to get the opportunity.

"Before a ball is kicked I want to be at the top end - but I am like everybody else. You have to aim high. I don't think any of my players will be happy being middle of the table.

"We all want to be in top spot but we are against clubs who have the same ambitions."

Little was unable to stop Darlington dropping out of the Football League in 1989 but he then guided the Quakers to the Conference title the following season.

Having also tasted success at the highest level with Aston Villa, Little - handed a two-year contract following Wrexham's relegation from the Football League - is eager to achieve something with the Reds.

"We have to take one step at a time but the prospect of promotion in any division is what you try and achieve," said Little.

"It is vital for a club to get back quickly and I understand that.

"No disrespect to the division, and it is a great division, but I don't want to be in non-league a long time.

"Having won things in the past, there is nothing better than achieving something, it is a great feeling."

But with one team automatically promoted as champions, and another four battling it out in the end of season play-offs, Little is under no illusion that regaining a place in the Football League is a foregone conclusion.

"Two teams in the division above are already virtually staring at relegation, so lots of things can help other teams relax," said Little.

"We are in a different scenario. We are coming up against a gaggle of clubs who, like ourselves, want to get out of this division, and it is a really hard, competitive league.

"We are still not sure of the good or bad teams but I know it will be competitive and we want to be in company at the right end."

With Wrexham in action six times before the end of August, Little stressed the importance of a decent start to the campaign.

"We've had a team meeting and talked about things that are going on behind the scenes," said Little.

"Everything is in place and everyone is positive.

"Today is the final preparation then away we go - and we are ready for that.

"And we could do with a few good results to begin with.

"It is a massive first month and I hope we win every game."

Summer signing Tom Kearney, who joined Wrexham from troubled Halifax Town, has been handed the captaincy by Little.

And Little believes midfielder Kearney, a former Everton trainee who has also played for Bradford City, is an excellent choice with good leadership qualities.

"The current situation says we need someone who takes responsibility well," said Little.

"Referees like someone to relate to and as captain you need someone who stops and thinks, and is not hot headed.

"Tom is a great choice. He knows this league, is experienced and has also played in the Football League.

"There are a lot of things on his shoulder but he will be a great liaison between referee and the team."

Little has a full strength squad to choose from for the visit of Graham Westley's Stevenage with the exception of full-back Kyle Critchell who begins a three-match ban incurred at previous club Weymouth.

Centre-back Steve Evans (chest) and left-sided Neil Taylor (toe) have recovered from injury, and although Little is likely to pick a side similar to the one that beat Stafford Rangers 6-0 in the final pre-season run-out last weekend, he said there are other players pushing for a starting place.

"We know what we are going to do," added Little. "I know the team at the moment but we have got alternatives which is great.

"People who did not start at Stafford came on and did well, and so have others not in the 18 last weekend.

"I have got no time for anyone who wants to mess us about, although I don't think that will happen. We've got 20-odd players and all of them are vital."

Wrexham are buoyed by the fact that 1,450 supporters have snapped up season tickets - the second highest total sold in the last six years.

And Football Secretary Geraint Parry hopes fans with continue to back Little's Reds this term.

"People took time to get over the disappointment of last season which is natural, but Brian Little has revamped the squad, performances, and results in pre-season have been good, and fans have reacted very positively," said Parry.

"It will be interesting to see how we get on when the season starts and we are hoping for a good crowd tomorrow."
