RITCHIE DE LAET is hoping his spell on loan at Wrexham will help him realise his dream of playing in the Premiership.
The full-back – 20 later this month – has joined Wrexham on an initial one-month loan deal from Stoke City.

Having made his debut in Saturday's 2-0 win against Lewes, the Belgian is expected to feature again tonight when the Reds take on Altrincham at Moss Lane in the third round of the Setanta Shield.

And de Laet, who joined Stoke on a three year deal for £100,000 from Royal Antwerp in July 2007 but is yet to make a first team appearance for the Potters, hopes coming to Wrexham will improve those chances.

"I want first team football and to play in front of good crowds. I want the experience of playing regularly," said de Laet. "Hopefully I go back to Stoke and break into the team.

"Last season when we were in the Championship I was close to getting my chance. But now we are in the Premiership the manager has brought in more quality so some of last season's players are now in the reserves.

"It is hard to get in. If we had stayed in the Championship I might have had my chance sooner but I am trying to get in.

"You need to play at the highest possible level for yourself, and that is the Premiership. It is the biggest league in the world and I would love to play in it."

De Laet was impressed with the way Wrexham like to play football, with victory over Lewes in his first outing the fourth in four Blue Square Premier matches under manager Dean Saunders.

"It went really well on Saturday," said de Laet. "It is a good standard and a good team here.

"I've never played against a Conference team but I have been on trial to other teams and Wrexham are better.

"Wrexham are a big club, they try to play football and not lump the ball forward. They like to pass the ball in midfield, and that is the way I like to play. I thought I played well, but I can do better.

"I only trained here twice but the lads helped me, and talked to me in the game. They are a good group and have made me feel welcome."

Victory against Lewes means Wrexham are five points behind leaders Kettering, but with a game in hand.

And as well as aiming to improve his chances of breaking into the first team at The Britannia Stadium, de Laet wants to help Wrexham in their push for promotion: "I just want to play as many games as I can and help myself and Wrexham," he added.

"If I can help Wrexham try to get promoted and will be glad to have been part of it. "I am here for a month but if it goes well, why not sign for another month?

"I'm really happy to be here. The training ground is like that of a Premiership or Championship club.

"It is always good to start on a winning way. I want more of them now and for us to take as many points as we can to help Wrexham."

Cypriot midfielder Angelos Tsiaklis also made his bow against Lewes after joining Wrexham on loan from Manchester City.

More signings could follow and two other trailists – Manchester City full-back Sam Williamson and Senagalese striker Daniel Bocande – are currently training with Wrexham with Saunders set to make a decision on the pair.

"They are having a week training with us and we will make a decision at the end of it," said Saunders.

But with more than 30 players in the senior squad, Saunders said he will have to make cuts so he can bring in fresh faces to keep improving Wrexham.

"The players have responded well. We look like a united bunch and there is a great spirit," added Saunders. "And I have had a fantastic response from those that have not played.

"There is nothing worse than coming in every day when you are not playing, waiting for your chance, but so far they have been great.

"They know I am bringing players in and some of the current players won't be at the club. I have got a few decisions to make."
