And the club's greatest side ever did it in style, thrashing Rotherham in front of 15,586 fans at The Racecourse.

How ironic that, 30 years on, Wrexham could lose their Football League status at The Racecourse if results don't go their way on Saturday,
"Football throws up ironies," said former Reds' winger Les Cartwright, who scored on that memorable day back in April 1978.

"When you look at Cardiff and Swansea, and the rugby, Wrexham are the only glitch in a year that has been fantastic for Welsh sport.

And Reds' legend Graham Whittle, who hit a hat-trick that day, said: "Wouldn't it be great if we could be talking about a side that had emulated our achievements.

"Unfortunately we haven't had one and it's going to take a miracle to save the club from heading out of the Football League."
