DEAN SAUNDERS today rued missed chances as Wrexham and Eastwood Town fought out a goal-less draw in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round at The Racecourse on Saturday.
The two teams will face each other in tomorrow night's replay at Coronation Park in a bid to win a place in the first round proper against Brackley Town, who play in the British Gas Business Premier League.

But Reds' boss Saunders was left to curse missed opportunities in front of goal at the weekend.

"If you add up the open goals we missed it must have been six or seven," said Saunders.

"If you don't keep the ball the system doesn't work and we couldn't keep the ball long enough to impose on them sometimes. But we still created enough chances.

"Shaun Whalley had a free header three yards out, Michael Proctor had a tap in, Neil Taylor had two from the D when he's running on to it which could have gone in.

"We played a lot better second half than we did first and even at the end Ashley Westwood had a chance right in the middle of the goal and it has gone over the bar."

Saunders still stretched his unbeaten run as manager to four games and he is confident Wrexham finish the job off tomorrow against the Unibond League Premier Division outfit.

"This is half-time and we have just won the last two away games," said Saunders. "There is no reason why we can't go there and win, although they played really well and we conceded a few silly free-kicks around the box and put pressure on ourselves. We didn't play enough football.

"It is only half-time, we will move on and it's a case of same again.
"There is no reason why we can't win."

Saunders admitted Wrexham did not play enough football at a windswept Racecourse Ground but he was still pleased to have avoided defeat.

"I am very lucky we have gone games without defeat, winning three and drawing one," said Saunders. "And I have learnt about the players I have got so I can make decisions on certain players.

"Normally you do it when you are losing at a cost.

"I have had a look at the players and I know where we need strengthening.

"Today it was obvious to everyone in the ground we did not have enough footballers on the pitch.

"I pick the team and I learned we did not play enough football."

Saunders was disappointed with his side's first half performance but believes there was a big improvement from his players after the break.

"The good thing is I am learning and we still haven't lost," said Saunders.

"That is four games we have gone now without losing.

"We just have to play better. I have learnt more about my players today and normally you learn when you are getting beat.

"It doesn't matter if we had Liverpool in front of us, it is still eleven versus eleven.

"And if we don't do the things we can do, and what I have asked them to do, then we won't win games.

"Today I told the players before the game why they were in the team, and what their jobs are, and I will ask them if they think they did it.

"Some will say yes, some will say no.

"Half-time I said it wasn't good enough and we did get a reaction second half which is what I was pleased about.

"But there are plenty more of those days to come, I know that and I am not kidding myself."

And Saunders paid tribute to plucky part-timers Eastwood who packed the midfield and played with a lone striker.

"It wasn't the best of games. Conditions weren't very good, it was a bit windy which is a bit of a leveller," added Saunders.

"Of all the conditions, that is the worst you can play in.

"We didn't play very well first half but second half I thought we played a lot better.

"First half I thought they stopped us playing and Gavin Ward has made a couple of good saves.

"I thought they did very well. They have come and had a go, and shut up shop.

"They've played five in midfield, one up front, and probably the two saves Wardy made first half and the one right at the end were probably their chances."
