Shaun Pejic is ready to do his bit for Wrexham FC

SHAUN PEJIC is hoping he is the player who benefits from the absence of two of Brian Little's regular centre-backs when Wrexham face highflying Cambridge United at The Abbey Stadium tomorrow (3pm).
Brian Little is without the injured Nat Brown, out with a recurrence of a groin strain sustained at Salisbury last week, and Steve Evans who has joined up with the Wales squad for the opening two World Cup group qualifiers.
One of three players – Pejic, Gareth Evans or Mike Williams – will line up in the heart of defence alongside Darren Kempson against the Us.
And with Williams waiting to hear if he will be required for Wales under 21s vital last European Championship qualifier against Romania on Tuesday, Pejic hopes he gets the nod for his first appearance of the season.
"Of course I want to be involved. If selected, it will be good to be back in the team," said Pejic today.
"I don't know what the team will be yet but I will be delighted to be in.
"Everyone wants to play and we will find out today. All three of us are fit and I am sure whoever is selected will give it their all. It will be great for whoever is chosen to step in.
"Someone will have the chance in the team and they have got to take it.
"If they do well, you don't know what will happen from there. It is a great opportunity for whoever plays."
Little, also without ankle ligament victim Kyle Critchell, is pleased with the way his defence has performed this term, conceding just five goals in seven games.
Yet to decide who will partner Kempson in defence, Little admits it is a blow to be without Evans and Brown: "We've had a hard start and a couple of injuries which have been tough on us," said Little. "We hoped Nat and Kyle would be part of the team, so to have these injuries and Steve being away is a blow.
"We have been strong at the back. The three big lads have done well.
"We will just have to change things – it happens."
Pejic, who made his Wrexham debut in the 2000-01 season, is the most experienced of the three centre-backs vying for a starting place having made nearly 200 league appearances for the Reds.
And the 25-year-old is disappointed to have been sitting on the sidelines this term: "It has been frustrating because everyone wants to be playing," he said.
"With previous managers, I have played a lot of games. I'm not used to not playing so that is frustrating.
"But it is part of football. You get your ups and downs, and when you get your chance you have to take it."
Wrexham recorded their first away win of the season last weekend at Salisbury but followed that with a first defeat at The Racecourse when they were beaten 1-0 by highflying Burton Albion on Tuesday.
That meant the Reds dropped to ninth place in the Blue Square Premier table but Pejic is confident they will be up there with the frontrunners: "We have performed well as a team but everyone is a little bit disappointed with some of the results," he added.
"But we are at the early stages of the season and with the squad we've got, and the positive attitude the staff have brought in, I'm sure we can get more wins and get up the table.
"It will be a tough game at Cambridge though.
"We've done okay against some of the decent teams this season and although we will be looking for a win, we can't be disappointed if we draw."
Apart from the centre-back position, Little does not anticipate many other changes to his side and midfielder Tom Taylor, who has signed a short term contract with the Reds, may have to wait for his debut.
"Neil Taylor looked tired in Wednesday's practice match after tonsillitis and he needs a few days on the training ground," said Little.
"Midfielder Christian Smith can double up on the left if needed, while Tom needs a week or two training to get used to us.
"I don't want to change too many things and the team won't be that much different."
