Substitute Spann had been on the pitch for eight minutes when his underhit back pass gifted Mansfield the lead.

But midfielder Spann played his part in Wrexham's recovery and was delighted with the backing he received from more than 500 travelling fans: "I did not expect that. I thought it was going to be 'Silvio we are going to hang you'," he said.

"I am enjoying it and I am thankful for the fans because they really make me feel at home coming all the way from Trinidad.

"Credit to them for that and I hope that they continue to support me.

"All I can do at the end is to try to play my best and help my club go back up."

Spann did not let his head drop following the error and he was thrilled with the victory.

"I was unfortunate with the backpass," said Spann. "At first I thought about it, but the guys told me to hold my head up high.

"Credit to the guys and the coach for standing on my side and giving me back my confidence because I was really down after that goal, and to the fans for acknowledging it was a mistake.

"It is highly unlikely it will ever happen again I would love to say.
"It was poor but we came out second half spot on and everything was fantastic. We should have beat this team 5-1.

"As we go along you will find the standard of football has raised another level."

Spann had only returned 24 hours before the trip to Mansfield from international duty with Trinidad and Tobago who beat America 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier.

And Spann, recalled to the squad under Saunders, is delighted the manager has got faith in him: "It's all happening all at once now," he added.

"I had my national team call-up and we had another historic day because we beat America for the first time. All in all it has been fantastic and God has been good to me.

"I came back on Friday afternoon and never thought I would play in the game.

"I played, we won and it is another motivating factor for us to move up higher again. It is nice to be a part of it.

"There is nothing more exciting and lovely than playing for a coach that believes in you.

"Hopefully I can reward him with that and the club by getting promotion back to where we rightfully deserve to be.

"It is good to be back in the team and winning. We have to make winning a habit."
