Midfielder Smith, released by Scottish League Division One side Clyde at the end of last season, has been offered a short term contract by Wrexham manager Brian Little who wants to take a further look at the trialist.
And Smith, who would be eligible for Wrexham's opening games in the Blue Square Premier, is aiming to make the most of his opportunity with the Reds and put himself in the reckoning for a place in the first team.
"I can't wait for the season to start," said Smith today. "Everything is geared up to get Wrexham back in the Football League and everyone here is confident.
"I am more than happy to stay here and get something sorted. The aim is promotion and for me personally it is to play well.
"I think I have got a part to play here. There is a big squad here and I will have to fight for a place. But it is healthy to have competition for places, and it is a long season.
"I hope to make a big impression here, though obviously I don't expect to play at the start. But over time I hope to show what I can do, although Tom Kearney and Levi Mackin have done well."
Smith began his career at Port Vale, who were managed by Martin Foyle, Wrexham's first team coach, during his time at the Staffordshire club.
And the 20-year-old is delighted to have been given the opportunity to train with Wrexham and build-up fitness levels.
"I have enjoyed it at Wrexham," added Smith. "It is only half an hour from where I live so it is good to get back close to home.
"I know Martin from my time at Port Vale and he asked me if I could come here to train. I've played some practice games and also in the friendlies against Crewe and Stafford and I've been happy how it has gone."
Little is eager to see more of Smith and a further decision on the player's future is expected to be made before the transfer window closes on August 31.
"I would like to offer Christian a short term contract to have a good look at him. Christian has done well up to now," added Little.
