Steve Evans out to impress at Wrexham FC

STEVE EVANS is determined to make the most of his re-call to the Wrexham side.
The Reds' centre-back was a substitute in Wrexham FC's opening two games of the campaign but has started the last two fixtures in place of the injured Nat Brown.
Delighted to have been given the opportunity, Wales international Evans knows solid performances in the Reds' back-line are needed to retain his place in the starting eleven.
"I was disappointed not to start the season but I've had my chance now," said Evans today.
"Nat has been injured which is unfortunate for him because he's done well in pre-season and the games he's played.
"I've come in and have to take that chance - it is up to me to stay there.
"If I don't, I know Nat is breathing down my neck."
Wrexham have only conceded two goals in four outings this term, keeping two clean sheets, and Evans, named in the Wales squad for the first two World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Russia early next month, is looking for more shut-outs.
"They were two sloppy goals to concede to be fair," said Evans.
"But the more clean sheets we have, the more games we are going to win.
"As a defender, that's what we want so hopefully we keep more of them and go on a run now.
"As long as we stay solid at the back, I'm sure we'll get goals at the other end."
Wrexham, seventh, in the Blue Square table, face Altrincham at Moss Lane today.
The Reds go into the game on the back of a 2-0 victory against ten-man Oxford United on Thursday to maintain a 100 per cent record at The Racecourse.
Leading 1-0 at the break thanks to Evans's opener, Wrexham had numerous chances throughout the contest and withstood a second half Oxford fightback before Jefferson Louis - who had earlier missed a penalty - made the points safe in injury time.
Evans admitted Wrexham should have had the game sown up by half-time but hopes the Reds can build on their two-game unbeaten run at Altrincham today, and remain among the leading pack.
"The sending off killed Oxford a bit but I thought we bossed the first half," said Evans.
"They had a go for 20-25 minutes and we were under the cosh. Gavin Ward made a couple of good saves and there were a few blocks - it could have been different.
"But we stuck to our guns and I thought we deserved it in the end. "We should have been out of sight by half-time as we missed a few chances.
"Then big Jeff came up with a goal to settle the nerves.
"Confidence is high and we have to keep it going.
"We know York was not the best performance or result but the last two have been a lot better.
"We have to take that into the Altrincham game and hopefully get the right result.
"I am looking forward to it. Hopefully we can build on what we have done and stay with the bunch at the top."
Evans, delighted with his first goal of the campaign against Oxford, an excellent diving header from captain Tom Kearney's corner, is aiming to improve on last season's tally.
"I enjoyed the goal," admitted Evans.
"To be fair we worked on it intraining in the day and luckily it came off which was pleasing.
"Hopefully I score more. I got three last year but I should be up to about six or seven, that's what I aim for.
"I am off the mark now so I am chuffed."
