STEVE EVANS knows the importance of Wrexham picking up points against their fellow League Two strugglers, starting on Saturday against Mansfield.
Bottom of the table Wrexham begin a busy March by welcoming Billy Dearden's Stags, the side currently occupying the other relegation spot, to The Racecourse on Saturday in a vital six-pointer.

A number of other teams in the lower reaches of the ta
ble also face Wrexham, whose six game unbeaten run was ended by Peterborough United on Tuesday, in the coming weeks and centre-back Steve said the Reds have got to produce the goods in these matches.

"It is a massive game and people may say it is a must win game, but we want to win as many games as possible," said Steve.

"We are going into it with a positive attitude and trying to win it.

"We need to start picking up wins and picking up points from the teams around us if we are going to get out of it.

"There are a lot of matches against our rivals coming up, and I think we have to play most of them at home. We have to produce it against those teams and get the results."

Wales international Evans did not get the birthday present he was hoping for on Tuesday when Wrexham were beaten 2-0 by Peterborough and he ended up limping off with a knee ligament injury.

But Evans, who turned 29, said heads would not drop in the battle to reach safety and is hoping for the ideal response against Mansfield.

"We have just come through a run of hard games," said Steve. "I know we lost against Peterborough but I thought we more than matched them, and it was just two free-kicks that beat us.

"Peterborough played the better football but we had a couple of chances that we should have done better with and we feel we deserved a draw.

"We are still confident. We were six games unbeaten before the defeat so we can't let it get us down.

"We have to pick ourselves up, go again against Mansfield and hopefully pick up three points."

Steve joined Wrexham in the summer of 2006 following seven successful seasons at Welsh Premier League outfit TNS where he won the league on three occasions and also lifted the Welsh Cup in 2005.

Also voted Welsh Premier League player of the season in 2004-05, and a Welsh semi-professional international like brother Ricky, Steve is hoping TNS clinch a fourth consecutive title for out-going manager Ken McKenna who is leaving at the end of the season.

"I still keep an eye out for The New Saints' results," said Steve.
"They have had a difficult couple of weeks but they got back on track at the weekend and are joint top.

"I hope they do it again. With Macca leaving, it would be nice for him to sign off with a fourth straight title.

"I've got a lot of time for Macca and he was probably the biggest influence on my career. Macca was the main reason why I came to Wrexham and I wish him all the best in whatever he does next."

Steve, who made over 150 Welsh Premier League appearances, also played in the same TNS side as Ricky before his brother joined Bangor.

Hoping Queens Park can cause an upset at Rhyl on Saturday, Steve admitted Ricky had been a quality midfielder in his career.

"He was superb when he was younger. He's getting on a bit now but he can still do it," a tongue-in-cheek Steve added.

"You still see glimpses of it. He has got fast feet and some of the things he can do with a ball are unbelievable.

"Ricky has probably got more skill in his left foot than I have in my whole body!

"Things did not work out for Ricky but he has played semi-professional football all his career and for Wales at that level.

"I know Ricky is looking forward to the game and it would be nice for him to get one over his old club.

"It's a big match against Rhyl and it would be great for everyone at Queens Park if they did it."
