GAVIN WARD is urging Wrexham to make sure they keep in touch with the leaders so they are in the promotion frame going into the New Year.
Wrexham take on Kidderminster Harriers at Aggborough tomorrow (3pm) having won all five league matches under manager Dean Saunders – the best start anyone has made to their managerial stint with the Reds.

That means that eighth place Wrexham are seven points behind leaders Torquay United but with two games in hand.

And goalkeeper Ward said there must be no let-up from the Reds in the quest to move alongside the frontrunners.

"We are on a good run but we expect to be doing that, and we have to keep it going," said Ward today. "It is no good if we lose the next couple.

"It is very tight at the top with three teams on the same points. We have got two games in hand on the majority of them and we must win those games to be within a point of those teams.

"We won't be content with where we are and have to keep going, especially with a lot of games coming up.

"A lot of teams will lose key players and go through a lack of form so it is important we keep pressing on.

"It is all about consistency and I think if we average two points a game we will be there or thereabouts.

"Two or three weeks after Christmas you might see a different league forming. There will be a little breakaway with two or three teams and it is important we are in the mix."

Wrexham travel to fifth place Kidderminster, who boast the best home record in the division, on the back of a 3-1 away win at Weymouth.

Having taken a 3-0 lead in a hard fought contest, a defensive error by centre-back Ashley Westwood denied Wrexham a clean sheet and Ward was disappointed the Reds conceded so late in the game.

"Keeping a clean sheet would have been the icing on the cake. As a keeper that's what you want," said Ward.

"It was frustrating as it was almost the last kick of the game – four or five seconds after the kick-off the whistle blew.

"That was the most annoying thing and I was fuming at the time, but it was a good win."

Ward has kept three clean sheets in 17 Blue Square Premier matches but the 38-year-old is constantly analysing his performances to try and get the best out of himself.

"I set myself targets and 10 or 12 clean sheets is a good return," said Ward. "I don't think I have kept enough but you always think you can do better.

"I've not been too pleased, but having said that not many goals have been my fault, though the second goal at Eastwood springs to mind.

"As a keeper you are always thinking could I have done that – there are always ifs."

And Ward admits the most pleasing aspect of his game is being alert enough to keep out the opposition in a match when he has been a virtual spectator.

"Being a keeper you want to keep clean sheets but playing well is the main thing," added Ward.

"Sometimes it is easier if you are kept busy rather than having to make one or two saves during the game – but you still have to do them.

"It is more satisfying if you only have a couple of things to do and you pull them off – like the penalty save against York – than when you are flying everywhere."
