WES BAYNES hopes to be in contention for a first start of the season at Salisbury on Saturday.
Baynes has been limited to substitute appearances so far for Wrexham in the Blue Square Premier, and was again a second half replacement in yesterday's 1-1 draw against Altrincham.

Having weighed in with his share of goals in pre-season and reserve team matches, right-sided Baynes hopes to have pressed his claims for a starting berth.

"I hoped to have been brought on earlier as you need a bit more time," said Baynes today. "But hopefully I am pushing for a start.

"I have been doing well in training and the reserve team matches, and I have been scoring goals.

"If I get my chance hopefully I can prove myself.

"I want to get in the first team, stay there and be a regular.

"Hopefully I start at Salisbury, it would be nice."

Baynes admitted that Wrexham's away form has been poor and is looking for an immediate response at surprise leaders Salisbury.

"We seem a lot more confident at home," said Baynes. "The fans have come to Altrincham so it is not really an excuse.

"I don't know what is wrong with us.

"We need to get it right at Salisbury - we need a win."

Baynes added: "I think it was a sloppy start at Altrincham and the goal they scored early on killed us.

"It looked like we did not have much confidence after that goal. We never really recovered from it.

"But we had a few chances and could probably have won the game.

"It is definitely two points dropped, especially as we have been doing well.

"You have got to beat teams like this."
