Williams eyes personal landmark

A PERSONAL haul of 20 goals and promotion with Wrexham would cap an "amazing" season for Marc Williams.
The Wales under 21 international striker has been in fantastic form since being given a run in the side under Dean Saunders, finding the back of the net six times to take his tally for the season to seven goals.

And although Williams admits the priority this term is promotion, he is hoping his rich vein of form in front of goal continues so he also reaches a personal landmark.

"If as a striker you play week in, week out, and someone has got faith in you - the goals will come, and they have," said Williams today.

"Dean did set a target of scoring 20 goals. It is a long season but if I can keep scoring like I am, I can achieve that, and we can get promotion.

"We have got to get back up to League Two, that is the priority. But it would be amazing to get 20 goals and promotion."

Williams made his first start of the season the day it was announced manager Brian Little had left the club by mutual consent having previously been restricted to a handful of substitute appearances.

But the 20-year-old says his confidence has been boosted since Saunders took charge.

"I will just keep my head down," said Williams. "I have learnt a lot already off the gaffer. Someone constantly talking helps rather than getting pushed to the side.

"Everyone is a better player with confidence and I have had that restored in me.

"I was left out of the squad altogether at Grays, then scored twice for the reserves, but still could not get back in.

"A new gaffer had to come in to kick start my career because I was sitting around doing nothing for about 13 games. If I had played then, I could have been up there on the same as our leading scorer."

Williams is currently three goals behind leading scorer Jefferson Louis and he hopes both of them continue to add to their tallies.

"I don't see it as a battle between us. Hopefully Jeff can get 20 goals as well," said Williams.

"Strike partners help each other and it is going well at the moment."

Williams is hoping to overcome a back complaint in time to face Kidderminster Harriers at Aggborough on Saturday.

The problem resurfaced during Saturday's 3-1 win at Weymouth and forced Williams to pull out of the Wales semi-professional squad for last night's international against Finland.

Wales lost 1-0 with Reds' midfielder Neil Taylor in the side.

"The injury in my lower back has been hampering me for a bit," said Williams.

"I first felt it against Altrincham in the Setanta Shield and obviously we played for 120 minutes there.

"We have been working hard in training and it came back in the last 15 minutes at Weymouth. However, I scored in that period!

"I have been involved for the last eight or nine games and we had a long journey to Weymouth.

"It will take its toll when you have not been involved for the majority of the season.

"The game last night would not have been good with the games coming thick and fast for Wrexham so hopefully I will be okay for the weekend with a bit of rest."

Wrexham head to Kidderminster having won all five league games under Saunders, which is the best start anyone has made to their managerial stint at The Racecourse.

That leaves eighth place Wrexham two points away from the play-offs and a further five behind new leaders Torquay but with two games in hand.

Williams is looking for the Reds to continue closing the gap on their promotion rivals.

"In this league everyone is beating each other and no one is pulling away," added Williams. "Kidderminster will be tough, and then we have got the likes of Stevenage and Kettering coming up.

"They are important games against teams around us and if we can get points from those it will get us into the top three, and then we can push on to try and get promotion.

"If we keep playing like we have been and keep working hard I am sure we will be up there at the end of the season.

"We are playing with a lot of confidence, there is a great morale about the place and everyone is looking forward to Kidderminster. We will try to make it six wins in a row."
