MARC WILLIAMS won't be content just playing a substitute role for Wrexham this season.
The Wales under 21 international striker came off the bench against Stevenage Borough on Saturday and scored the final goal in the 5-0 victory at The Racecourse.

Having also grabbed three goals in pre-season friendlies, Williams is hoping to be in contention for a starting place when Wrexham travel to York City in the second Blue Square Premier fixture of the campaign on Thursday.

"I was pretty disappointed that I did not play," said Williams. "You want to be in the starting eleven rather than on the bench.

"I just wanted to come on and take my chance.

"I don't just want to be a bench player so you have to keep impressing the gaffer it get in the side. That is everyone's aim.

"I don't want to sit on the bench all season so I have to do well when I come on, and I got a few goals in midweek too.

"When the chance comes I have to be ready and score a few goals to stay in there.

"Hopefully I will start, that is what I am pushing for. It would be nice to be in there and to be playing in a winning team."

Williams –- one of five different scorers – was delighted to have found the back of the net in Wrexham's opening day win but admitted that getting a favourable result was the priority.

"It was nice to come on and score and make it 5-0," he said. "But it was more important that we got a result, and it was a great way to start the season.

"You want to take three points from your first game and to do it like that was brilliant.

"Hopefully we continue that on Thursday and build on that result."

Wrexham face two away games in three days with Thursday's trip to York followed by the fixture at Rushden and Diamonds on Sunday.

With confidence high in the Wrexham camp, Williams believes the Reds can handle the double header on the road: "I'm looking forward to the York game," he said.

"Everyone was buzzing after the final whistle on Saturday and confidence is high going after winning 5-0 against one of the promotion favourites, and keeping a clean sheet.

"It was completely different coming in for training today than last season.

"We've now got a couple of important away games and they won't be easy. We've got to keep working hard to try and pick up three points.

"We've got some long journeys and will be playing on pitches not as good as The Racecourse so we have got to adapt to that this season.

"We have got a big squad and are fit enough to play two away games in three days, although there might be a few changes."
