TOM KEARNEY is calling on his team-mates to stand up and be counted tomorrow when Wrexham face in-form Torquay United at The Racecourse (3pm).
Wrexham have been beaten in four of their last five matches and have slipped to 13th position in the table following defeats in the last week against Grays (2-1) and Rushden & Diamonds (3-0).

Results, and the manner of the last two performances, have put pressure on manager Brian Little who is adamant he wants to see the job through.

And skipper Kearney is urging Wrexham – still only five points away from the play-offs – to rise to the challenge of getting the season back on track by recording a positive result against Torquay who have won their last four matches.

"We have to stick together and do the right things," said Kearney today.

"It is a difficult time but this happens in football and you have come through it, which we will.

"It is going to be tough against Torquay but it is a game every player has to look forward to.

"We have got the challenge of getting back to winning ways for the players, staff and supporters.

"The manager of any club is the first person fans look to, but the players have to take responsibility for the performances – and they have not been good enough.

"Everyone has to say 'it is down to me to put in right tomorrow', and givethe fans something to cheer about.

"Even when it is going smoothly and you are winning 4-0 each week the good players stand up and do the ugly things. We've got to do that and hopefully we get the rewards tomorrow."

Kearney admits that Wrexham, who enjoyed a decent start to the campaign, are lacking in confidence following their barren run: "There was a lot of expectation after pre-season to go on and do well, and we were confident after the start we had," he said.

"But for some reason, there has been a knock-on effect and things have gone against us.

"Confidence has gone but everyone is looking to put it right the next game."

Having started the season with a flurry of goals and a mean defence, the Reds have been struggling at both ends of the pitch in recent weeks.

And Kearney believes Wrexham have to strive to keep a clean sheet tomorrow to give them something to build on: "We are conceding sloppy goals and that it down to the whole team, not just the defence," he said.

"And going forward things are not happening, but we will create chances with the players we've got.

"Whoever plays, first and foremost we have got to keep a clean sheet.
"If we do that, we have got a platform to build on."

Kearney, installed as captain for Wrexham's first Blue Square Premier campaign, is aiming to lead by example to help the Reds come through their poor spell.

"I was given the captaincy in pre-season and I am enjoying it, I like the added pressure," added Kearney.

"Everyone has to make sure their game is right and put a shift in, concentrate on their own game.

"All I can do is try and set a good example, do the right things and pull people together when things are difficult.

"It's all about helping each other out and getting through this period."

Meanwhile, first team coach Martin Foyle, who took charge of training yesterday, is eager to tighten up at the back after seeing Wrexham concede five goals this week against Grays and Rushden.

And he expects changes to the starting eleven: "It has been disappointing with the goals we have conceded because we've had two or three years of that," said Foyle. "I thought we had sorted that in pre-season and early on in the season.

"We have got to get back to tightening up again. If you can keep a clean sheet you have a chance in any game.

"But we have worked hard in training, have been chopping and changing looking at different options and combinations.

"Everyone has a chance tomorrow – we have to look at everybody. Apart from Kyle Critchell, we have the whole squad to look at. The pressure is how we handle this and which players can do that, so we need the ones who are a bit more confident."

Foyle believes Little has been let down by the team's recent performances and accepts supporters' displeasure, although he is asking fans to get behind the Reds tomorrow.

"I can understand the fans' frustration," said Foyle. "The players got away with murder last year, but we need the fans.

"Torquay will try and frustrate us so I ask the fans just to please try and help us out. Collectively we want a result to try and get back on track. I am disappointed how the manager has been let down and we have to put a smile on the fans' faces."

If Wrexham continue to fail to produce the goods, Foyle understands the repercussions: "We need to change it quickly or personnel changes," he added.
