WREXHAM FC were beaten thanks to goals in either half from Cambridge United's Mark Beesley.
The Reds, who lost at home to Burton Albion on Tuesday, were looking to get back on track against a Cambridge side that has enjoyed a promising start to the season.
But Brian Little's side went behind on 28 minutes when Beesley struck after Mark Convery's corner was headed on by Chris Holroyd.
Wes Baynes and Simon Brown both went close for Wrexham, but the scoreline remained 1-0 at the break.
After the re-start, former Reds striker Lee McEvilly had a header saved by Gavin Ward, while Levi Mackin saw a long range effort clear the bar at the other end.
But Cambridge - who also included Phil Bolland in their line-up - went further ahead on 64 minutes. Holroyd's shot from McEvilly's cross hit the bar and Beesley was on hand to score.
The result leaves the Reds in 13th in the table and manager Brian Little will have plenty to ponder ahead of next Saturday's clash against Ebbsfleet United.
Wrexham: Ward, Spender, Kempson, Pejic, Tremarco, Baynes (62 Proctor), Mackin, Kearney, Whalley, Louis, Simon Brown (82 Aiston),
