BRIAN LITTLE admitted he is at a loss to explain why his Wrexham team are so inconsistent.
Wrexham were unable to build on last week's victory over Ebbsfleet, and record back to back wins for the first time in 18 months, as they were beaten 2-1 against Grays Athletic at The Recreation Ground.

Two first half goals put Grays in control and although Levi Mackin pulled a goal back with a spectacular free-kick five minutes after the break, the home side ran off deserved winners.

A fourth defeat in ten Blue Square Premier outings leaves Wrexham 12th in the table, four points away from the play-offs and eight behind leaders Crawley Town, and Little cannot understand why the Reds are so erratic.

"I am disappointed and it is so difficult to explain why it is happening at the moment," said Little today.

"Talking before the game to one or two people who said how are you thinking and I said to be honest I'm not really sure – we are just like Jekyll and Hyde at the moment.

"We saw it there in 45 minutes, and were more inspired in the second half without playing well. We had a couple of chances and perhaps could have scraped a draw.

"We are all over the place and really not good enough again today first half.

"I thought we competed but they were two poor goals again. We just keep giving the most ridiculous goals away.

"Second half, people did a little bit better and we could have scored another goal. Their goalkeeper pulled a couple of good saves off and perhaps we looked like the side to get back into it.

"I would expect to play better, that is the biggest disappointment."

Wrexham have now only won one of their six away matches this season, drawing two and losing the other three.

The Reds now have two consecutive matches at The Racecourse, with Rushden & Diamonds the visitors tomorrow and Torquay United on Saturday.

Disappointed with Wrexham's form on the road, Little wants to end September with two home wins: "After a pre-season of everyone working hard and looking as if we have got it right, on the road we are just not producing the goods," he said.

"We said at half-time that it is alright turning up on Tuesday night and having a real good go and perhaps beating someone at home, but this is where we are going to do well.

"This is where we find out whether we can do really well in the league or not and we just have not done well enough today.

"It is very frustrating for us all and we are all pretty dejected but we just have to rub ourselves down again and try and finish the month off with two home performances.

"The disappointment is we will probably turn up on Tuesday, put in a good performance and quite possibly win because that has been the nature of our season.

"We have got to try and win those two games and get the team in the right direction, and hopefully get it right before long."

Little slammed the defending which led to striker Keiron St Aimie, making his debut after joining on loan from Barnet, giving Grays a 2-0 half-time lead.

"What Simon Spender has ended up doing for the first one I am not sure," said Little. "He has mis-read the ball and run after the player as opposed to cutting the goal off and it really did look poor.

"And the second one, big Steve Evans who normally is very consistent, messed up and did not clear a ball, and we were 2-0 down.

"Even at half-time, 1-0 I felt we had a chance because we can come back in games like that, but today the second goal really killed us.

"Once we got a goal in the second half it looked good, and there were a couple of scrambles on the line. but all in all we were not good enough.

"I know that and the players know that. We looked very frail in certain areas and that was disappointing."

Little insisted there will be no let-up in as Wrexham attempt to get back on track.

"We will just keep working hard and going on," added Little. "The biggest single thing in any situation when you are not playing well is you have to keep grafting with each other.

"We have to keep encouraging each other to do better, and give each other a hard time of course – we have had plenty of that in recent weeks.

"Hopefully we will sort it out."
