Wrexham always number one for Evans

STEVE EVANS today revealed that re-signing for Wrexham was always his preferred choice – and said he is eager for the Reds to make up for last season's relegation nightmare.
The Wales international centre-back has agreed a new one-year deal with the option of extending the contract by a further 12 months next summer.

Evans yesterday put pen to paper after accepting the offer put to him by manager Brian Little and the 29-year-old is pleased to stay at hometown club Wrexham.

"I am delighted to sign and chuffed to bits to get it all sorted out," said Evans today. "I have had talks with the gaffer and I just had to do what was best for me and my family. I am just happy to have re-signed and got things settled.

"I always wanted to stay. I am proud to be playing for Wrexham and I want to be part of a winning team.

"I have got a few weeks now to get myself all sorted and ready before we report back for pre-season training."

Evans spent seven successful seasons at Welsh Premier League outfit The New Saints before joining Wrexham in the summer of 2006.

An impressive start to the 2006-07 season caught the eye of Wales manager John Toshack and Evans, who has now won six international caps, was named Wrexham's Player of the Year.

But Wrexham's 87-year unbroken membership of the Football League came to an end last season when they were relegated to the Blue Square Premier.

Disappointed to have been part of that, Evans is determined to make ammends and help Wrexham win immediate promotion.

"I just want to put right what went wrong last season, and I am glad I have got the chance to do that," added Evans. "Hopefully we will go straight back up.

"A few new players have already joined and the gaffer knows what he is doing. Hopefully we can get it right this season, and get promotion. I believe we can.

"Last year was disappointing and it would be great now to have a good season."

Evans is just one of three players to have been offered a new contract by Little who is rebuilding his Wrexham squad.

Full-back Carl Tremarco has already re-signed while winger Matty Done has not yet made a decision about his future.

Twenty-two players were told by Little that their futures lie away from The Racecourse, with senior players such as Neil Roberts, Chris Llewellyn and Danny Williams among those released.

And Little said it was now up to Evans to prove that he deserves the second year extention.

"Steve is happy at the club, he wants to do well and I am pleased he has signed," said Little.

"There was a bit of give and take with both sides and the incentive is for Steve to get a second year.

"Steve wanted a second year, and if he plays regular first team football, and has a good season, it should not be a problem.

"But I am not giving two year deals out to someone that was part of a relegated team.

"And outside of a couple of younger players, Steve is the only senior player to be offered a new deal.

"The challenge for Steve is to prove to everyone he is worthy of a second year."

Although Little holds Evans in high regard, he is hoping the big defender will eradicate the errors which affected his game last season.

"Steve made one or two mistakes which proved costly," said Little. "He has got to cut them out and make sure there is no repeat otherwise he might not be in the side.

"But other than that, Steve has a good attitude and his commitment is spot on. It is all there for him and I hope he responds to the challenge."

Little, who has already made three summer signings – midfielder Paul Caren, and strikers Simon Brown and Jefferson Louis – is looking to add further to his squad.

And despite seeing Evans re-sign, Little hopes to bolster his defence further but a new goalkeeper is unlikely to arrive at the moment.

Goalkeeper Anthony Williams is one of five players on the transfer list and Little, who has Gavin Ward and first year pro Chris Maxwell as his other shot-stoppers, is unlikely to bring in another unless the former Wales under 21 international moves on.

"I want some competition at the back," added Little. "At the moment I can't afford to bring in another goalkeeper. I would prefer outfield players.

"What happens to Anthony will dictate whether I can take another keeper.
"I would like to build my own team and have competition and cover in every position.

"New people might make some players already here perform better. There might be a surprise to come out of the pack."

- Wrexham Supporters' Trust will be holding their AGM tomorrow night in The Centenary Club at The Racecourse.

Members attending the meeting are reminded that they will need to bring their membership cards, suitable identification or the notice of the meeting in order to gain entry.
