Ellison is in his second spell at Chester after initially joining the club from Stockport County following a loan spell at Lincoln City.
The Liverpool-born 28-year-old scored nine goals in 24 league starts at Chester before being transferred to Hull City for a £100,000 fee in January 2005.
Ellison netted twice in 26 league starts for the Humberside club before signing for Tranmere Rovers where he scored four times in 26 league starts.
He re-joined Chester in June 2007 and has so far scored eight goals in 26 league appearances as a left-sided midfielder.
Ellison started his career at Conwy United and Altrincham, before playing for Leicester City in the Premiership in 2001.
Wrexham manager Brian Little has already signed 11 players since the transfer window opened, including Phil Bolland and Gavin Ward from Chester.
