Wrexham boss Little in no rush for new faces

BRIAN LITTLE is in no rush to complete his squad for the new season just yet – but a fifth new signing of the summer could arrive over the weekend.
With his rebuilding of the Wrexham squad fully under way, Little has already made four new signings – midfielder Paul Carden, winger Shaun Whalley, and strikers Simon Brown and Jefferson Louis – and has been tracking a number of players, including Halifax Town midfielder Tom Kearney and former Brentford winger Ricky Shakes.

Goalkeeper Chris Maxwell and defender Chris Marriott have penned their first professional contracts, and full-back Carl Tremarco and centre-back Steve Evans have signed new deals.

Eleven players are contracted beyond the summer while another five have been placed on the transfer list, and they will determine how many more new signings are made.

Little is aiming to go into the new season with 24 first team squad members and although another new recruit could arrive today, he is going to weigh up his options before reaching the full complement of players.

"I am hoping to conclude a deal for a player today but it may not come off just yet," said Little today.

"We have spoken to that many players but I have got to try and balance the squad up. It takes a bit of time to rebuild and I still think I will be working on it in July.

"I would like a few more new faces in by then, and some could leave, but you have got to be patient.

"I am still in the process of trying to change things around and hopefully by the start of the season there will be a good group of 24 players.

"We have got things there already. The form of Wes Baynes and Neil Taylor pleased me at the end of last season and Levi Mackin also did well, but they need other players around them.

"And three or four of those on the transfer list might be part of that group."

Anthony Williams, Richard Hope, Silvio Spann, Sam Aiston and Michael Proctor were the five players made available for transfer by Little last month.

Aiston was Little's first signing when he took over as Wrexham manager last November, originally joining on loan from Northampton Town before signing an 18 month deal in the January transfer window.

And Little admits he rates Aiston but believes the midfieder could have offered more.

"I brought Sam here because he is a decent player but he had good and bad days," said Little.

"I believe Sam can play better than he did, but at the same time I have given him the opportunity to move on."

Little, who has arranged for trialists to train with Wrexham in pre-season, is also mindful of the fact that he has got a budget to adhere to.

And having mainly brought in experienced players during the January transfer window in an attempt to keep Wrexham in League Two, Little says he is eager to add youth to his squad.

"There are players I would like to sign but you have to do it in an orderly way," added Little.

"You have to operate as a proper business. You can't just go out and buy left, right and centre, I have got a budget to work to.

"I had a push on that when I first came in last season but they were different circumstances as I had to freshen it up.

"Now I am trying to mould a team to challenge in this league and it is a gradual process.

"You have certain budgets to meet so why not have a couple of young players who might develop into something."
