Wrexham are nine points adrift of safety following yesterday's 3-0 defeat at Shrewsbury Town and only have four matches remaining.

And midfielder Williams, who criticised Wrexham's performance, said there was little hope of avoiding the drop – but he will not give up until it is mathematically certain.

"Disappointment is an understatement," said Williams. "I would say it is embarrassing for the fans who have come to watch a derby match. It was a cowardly performance.

"I think some of us have given up the fight and it looked that way today.

"I don't know if that is it now.

"I say we will fight on until the end of the season but I am not quite sure I am saying the right thing there.

"It does not look good now. You can't give up hope while there is still a chance but it is going to take a miracle.

"It is disappointing because three points at Shrewsbury would have given us a chance of catching Dagenham and Redbridge.

"But after putting in a performance like that we deserve to go down."

Wrexham-born Williams could not hide the disappointment that Wrexham are almost certainly going to lose their Football League status.

"It does hurt me," said Williams. "The likes of myself and Neil Roberts, Wrexham lads, want the club to stay in the Football League so much. The lads who live away from Wrexham don't get people coming up to you asking 'what's going on?' It is different when you live somewhere else."

Williams was unhappy with the defending for Shrewsbury's goals and said the Reds paid the price for making errors yet again.

"We talked before the game about the amount of mistakes we have made this season. That's why we are where we are," added Williams. "Then the first goal was a mistake.

"You may as well not tell the players anything, and go and let them play.

"They were three silly goals again – and they have cost us."
