WREXHAM held on for a vital three points against Bury in a hard-fought encounter at The Racecourse.

The Reds took the lead on 25 minutes when Sam Aiston broke from deep inside his own half and raced clear of the Bury defence.

His effort was saved by Darren Randolph but Drewe Broughton was on hand to slide Wrexham in front.

The goal followed a sustained spell of pressure from Bury, and Brian Little's side were grateful to two superb saves from keeper Gavin Ward.

Little had opted for a 4-4-2 formation, with Gareth Evans lining up alongside Phil Bolland in the centre of defence.

Neil Taylor continued in the centre of midfield, with Paul Hall and Aiston the wide men.

And Broughton almost doubled the advantage with a long range effort that clipped the upright with Randolph beaten.

Five minutes before half time, the Reds were forced into a reshuffle when Carl Tremarco was replaced by Mike Williams after picking up an injury.

And Bury hit back three minutes into injury time when Glynn Hurst headed home Brian Barry-Murphy's cross.

It was a cruel blow for Wrexham, who were forced into another change at half time with Matty Done replacing the injured Taylor.

The Reds started the second half strongly and could have been in front again minutes after the re-start when Broughton's effort from Aiston's cross was saved by Randolph.

Leading scorer Michael Proctor then put the ball in the net only to see it ruled out for offside.

Bury then had a goal ruled out in a similar manner as the game opened up.

But it was Wrexham who took the lead with just under a quarter of an hour to go when the excellent Simon Spender crossed into the six yard box and Proctor was able to side-foot home from a couple of yards out.

Proctor should have made it safe when he ran clear, but he shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

The Reds are now four points adrift of Notts County and safety with two games in hand.

Wrexham: Ward, Spender, Bolland, G Evans, Tremarco (41 Mike Williams), Hall (76 Nicholson), Aiston, Taylor (45 Done), Llewellyn, Broughton, Proctor. Subs not used: Anthony Williams, Marc Williams.
