STEVE EVANS today spoke of his love of playing for Wales.

Many players treat end of season international friendlies as a chore, but not Wrexham defender Evans who is relishing the prospect of adding to his six Welsh caps.

"I'm really looking forward to going to Iceland and Holland," said Evans, who will be joined by Wrexham team-mate, Mark Jones in John Toshack's 35-strong travelling party.

"Going away with Wales is a great experience. There is a tremendous team spirit among all the players and the staff.

"You are training with players who play in a higher league than you so you are always going to learn."

Evans hasn't put a foot wrong on the six times Toshack has called the former TNS centre back into the Wales first team line-up.

"I've got six caps so far and I want to add to those. I want to stay involved with the Welsh team because these are exciting times for the country.

"We've got a World Cup campaign starting next season and I want to be part of it.

"There are so many good young players coming through and the future looks very bright.

"If I'm called on to play in both games then I'll give it my best. It's just great – an honour – to be called up and, as I said, I'm going to enjoy it."

Evans' regular room-mate on Wales' get-togethers used to be Sunderland's former Chester and Buckley Town defender, Danny Collins.

But Collins has not made the tour party and Evans predicted: "I'll probably have to room with Mark Jones."

And Reds team-mate Jones hopes to put himself in the shop window after deciding that a move away from his home-town club would help further his career.

Evans, who will meet up with the Welsh squad on Monday, refused to be drawn on his future career at The Racecourse.

He is concentrating solely on the Iceland and Dutch trip where Wales may be forced to find a new captain as stand-in skipper Simon Davies is doubtful for next week's friendly double-header

The Fulham midfielder, who has been Wales captain in Craig Bellamy's absence, has an ankle injury.

Davies, winner of 50 caps for Wales, has been instrumental in helping Fulham survive Premier League relegation.

Jermaine Easter is also struggling as the Plymouth Argyle striker has tendonitis and may pull out of the 35-man squad.

Two ex-Wrexham players will spend the summer looking for new clubs. Robbie Garrett has been released by Stoke City while Darlington have not renewed Neil Wainwright's contract.
