A GOAL in either half - including a stunning strike by Michael Proctor - was enough to earn Wrexham three vital points against arch-rivals Chester.

A crowd of 3,849 watched a typically competitive derby fixture in which the Blues almost took the lead in the first minute when Chris Holroyd's shot was turned onto the post by Gavin Ward, who had an outstanding game.

But it was the Reds who took the lead midway through the first half when Paul Hall - returning to the starting eleven - fired home after being set up by Proctor.

Managerless Chester battled back but could not find a way through a well-organised Wrexham defence, featuring ex-City players Richard Hope and Phil Bolland.

And it was the Reds who sealed the points on 64 minutes when Proctor produced a superb shot from 18 yards to beat Blues keeper John Danby.

The result means Wrexham are now just three points away from safety, with three games in hand over Macclesfield.

Chester: Danby, Vaughan, Roberts, Linwood, Wilson (62 Rutherford), Holroyd (77 McManus), Dinning, Hughes, Sandwith, Murphy, Ellison. Subs not used: Palethorpe, Kelly, Rule

Wrexham: Ward, Bolland, Hope, Mike Williams, Spender, Whitley, Hall (72 Nicholson), Llewellyn, Tremarco, Broughton (80 Duffy), Proctor (85 Aiston). Subs not used: A Williams, Spann
