Wrexham FC's Andy Fleming is facing a spell on the sidelines after damaging his cartilage during this week's practice match.
Wrexhanm midfielder Andy Fleming is due to see a surgeon today to see if he requires an operation after picking up the knee injury in Tuesday's 2-2 friendly draw against Accrington Stanley.
It is a huge blow for Fleming who has come in from the cold and impressed in Wrexham's two victories under Dean Saunders.
And Fleming – definitely out of Saturday's trip to Mansfield Town – could not hide the disappointment: "I was trying to turn and twisted my knee," he said. "I tried to run it off and carry on but it was too painful.
"I has come at a really bad time, just as I was getting a chance in the side.
"It is a new start for us all and I was buzzing when I was called up for Forest Green.
"I wasn't expecting to play but I was delighted to get in the side.
"I am gutted this has happened, it could not have come at a worse time.
"It's just my luck and I just want to get back soon."
With Saunders making changes for his first game in charge, Fleming made his first appearance of the season in the 3-2 victory at Forest Green Rovers.
Wrexham followed that with a 3-1 victory against York City to continue Saunders' excellent start in charge.
Fleming earned praise in both outings but the 21-year-old insists there is more to come.
"I just try and give 100 per cent and hopefully bring something to the side," added Fleming.
"It was nice to hear what fans have said about me, especially with how the games went. But personally I think I can do a lot more."
Assistant manager Terry Darracott admitted losing Fleming was a blow and hoped the injury was not serious: "Andy took a knock to his knee and he will see someone today with regard to the extent of it," he said. "We will have to see exactly what it is.
"I only saw Andy in the one game and he did very well. And in training you can see he is a good player, has good attitude and works hard.
"Obviously we hope it is nothing too much."
Wrexham's three Wales under 21 internationals returned to training yesterday after the heartache of missing out on a place in next summer's European Championships.
Brothers Mike and Marc Williams did not feature in either of the two legs against England which Wales lost 5-4 on aggregate, while Joe Allen – on loan from Swansea City – made a second half substitute appearance in the first tie.
And Darracott hopes Silvio Spann also returns tomorrow unscathed from international duty with Trinidad and Tobago who faced USA last night in a World Cup qualifier.
"The three have come back intact," said Darracott.
"Joe got 20 minutes in the first game and while the other two didn't play, I expect being away has been a great experience.
"I am sure in the future all of them will get a further look in with the under 21s as they have done well, and it is good to have them back.
"We are just waiting on Silvio and we won't know how he is until we see him tomorrow.
"Silvio played in the last game against York as did the other three so hopefully he comes back in the same condition. We will have to see what shape he is in with regards to Saturday's team."
Manager Saunders is also due back today after assisting Wales boss John Toshack for the past week.
Darracott – along with fellow assistant Brian Carey – has taken charge of training in Saunders' absence and the former Wrexham full-back has enjoyed getting to know the Reds' squad.
"I have enjoyed it, it has been great," added Darracott. "I needed to get to know the players and I feel I now know them a lot better.
"I have worked with them every day with the gaffer being away and it has been an invaluable time.
"Dean is well in touch and knows everything we have done.
"I can't wait for Saturday and I am sure the players are the same. It has been a long time since Tuesday week."
Leading scorer Jefferson Louis also missed training yesterday with a hamstring strain sustained during Tuesday's practice match and his fitness will be assessed ahead of the Mansfield trip.
But two right sided Reds' players are still some way off a return.
Kyle Critchell has had an operation to remove a piece of floating bone from an ankle, while Simon Spender is due to have the plaster taken off his elbow and replaced with a light cast.
There is better news for centre-back Gareth Evans who has been missing with an ankle ligament injury. A scan has revealed Evans does not need surgery and he hopes to be back in training next week.
