MIKE WILLIAMS today admitted that he was so dazed against Mansfield on Saturday that he still thought Brian Little was Wrexham manager!
Mike Williams was forced off with concussion at Field Mill and was suffering from short term memory loss in the changing room after Wrexham ran out 2-1 winners.

As a precaution with the nature of the head injury, the centre-back was driven home to Colwyn Bay by his parents and could recollect nothing about the game.

"I think I got an elbow from Jason Lee. I carried on but Mel Pejic could see there was something wrong as I was holding my head," said Williams.

"I asked Neil Taylor what position I was playing because I did not know. I was just on auto pilot.

"I had to sit on the floor after about ten minutes. They asked me a few questions and could see I was not all there so I had to go off.

"I asked my mum in the car on the way home where Brian Little was. I thought he was still manager!

"You can laugh about it now but short term memory loss is serious. I could not remember going away with Wales.

"I was okay on Sunday, things were coming back to me except for the second half and after the game in the changing room."

Williams' leveller at Mansfield was his first goal for the first team and it won him a bet struck with manager Dean Saunders.

But the 21-year-old still does not remember his header which came from a Wes Baynes corner.

"I can't remember the goal for some reason," said Williams, who was partnered in the Reds' defence by new signing ,and man of the match, Ashley Westwood.

"I have seen it on television but I could not remember what happened.

"What made it better is the gaffer bet me £25 before the game.

Unfortunately he bet £100 the week before so the odds were not as good!

"But I did not remember anything about the bet afterwards.

"However, the gaffer did pay his debt although I did ask him what it was for.

"A few of the lads were saying things like 'remember to bring that £100 that I owe them'."

Delighted to have opened his Wrexham account, Williams was pleased Wrexham recovered from going behind to record a victory, with brother Marc scoring the winning goal.

"We have worked on a few things in training, I got there before my man and it went in," said Williams. "I've scored for the reserves and in a friendly but it was great to get my first league goal.

"It was a good time to score so soon after conceding a sloppy goal.

"When we have gone down we have showed great character to come back.

"I don't remember much about the game but it was scrappy with not much football played and we had to defend a lot."

Williams, out of favour with ex-boss Little, has started Wrexham's last four games which have resulted in three victories and a draw.

Pleased to have been given a run in the side under Saunders, Williams is now facing a spell on the sidelines because of his head injury and is unlikely to be risked when Wrexham host Eastwood Town in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round on Saturday.

"I will have to take it easy for a few weeks," added Williams.

"I don't think I will be okay for Saturday, and we will have to see how I react to exercise. They do say it will be a couple of weeks.

"That is three wins in a row now for us. I have come in for four games since Brian Little left so I have had a good run in the side.

"I am happy to be playing again. It is so frustrating on the sidelines.

"I am pleased to have got my chance and I just hope I have proved to the gaffer I can keep my shirt.

"If someone now comes in and does well then that is football. As long as the team is doing well I am quite happy."
