WREXHAM are going to have to sort out their away form if they are going to challenge for honours this season.
Brian Little's side were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw against Altrincham at Moss Lane yesterday, meaning the Reds have yet to record an away win in three Blue Square Premier outings this term.

That is in stark contrast to Wrexham's 100 per cent record at The Racecourse but it is not just results that are better on home territory.

Performances have not been as impressive on the road.

Yesterday, too many high balls crept into Wrexham's game, the Reds did not play enough passing football on the ground and lacked creativity.

Creating chances is something that Wrexham have not struggled to do at home, but there were less scoring opportunities at Altrincham, who were beaten 4-0 at Kidderminster on Saturday, as the Reds struggled to break down a stubborn home defence.

Wrexham never recovered from conceding a sixth minute goal, although Jefferson Louis's third goal of the season gave hope of all three points, but this was a game the Reds were expected to win.

Altrincham have only avoided relegation the last three seasons because of other clubs' mis-fortunes and are not considered one of the stronger teams this term.

Altrincham would definitely be the happier of the two with the point and if Wrexham are going to mount a promotion challenge, these are the type of games that have to be won.

That is not being disrespectful to the likes of Altrincham.

But there are high expectations at Wrexham and the evidence shown in two home matches – against two teams expected to be challenging at the top of the table – shows they are more than capable of doing it away.

Consistency both home and away is crucial if Wrexham are going to be in the shake up themselves.

For the first time this season, Little named an unchanged side on the back of Thursday's victory against Oxford United.

Wrexham were quick out of the blocks and created their first opening within 20 seconds of the first whistle.

Sam Aiston's cross just evaded Louis and Warren Peyton almost put the ball through his own net, while Steve Evans headed over the bar from the resulting corner.

But if Wrexham thought they were going to have it all their own way, they were soon proved wrong as Altrincham took the lead in the sixth minute.

Anthony Danylyk scuffed his shot but the ball fell into the path of Chris Senior who nodded past Gavin Ward.

Back came Wrexham and Kyle Critchell's 25 yard drive was spectacularly tipped over the bar by Coburn, and the home keeper then denied Darran Kempson from the corner.

An unmarked Greg Young headed Alex Meechan's corner over the bar at the other end, but it was Wrexham who began to threaten a goal after enjoying the majority of the possession.

Louis headed a Shaun Whalley cross straight at Coburn and the tall striker then failed to hit the target after being put through on goal by Aiston, recklessly blasting over the bar and small stand.

But Louis atoned for the miss on 39 minutes by scoring the equaliser after being fouled by former Wrexham defender Mark McGregor.

Captain Tom Kearney delivered the free-kick and Louis rose highest to head past stranded keeper Coburn who had come off his line to collect.

Simon Brown replaced Aiston on the left of midfield for the start of the second half, and he almost made an immediate impact.

Brown centred from the by-line but Louis's close range effort was blocked by McGregor, and Whalley was unable to force the loose ball over the line in a packed six yard box.

Altrincham immediately countered and Colin Little failed to turn Danylyk's low drive home after 49 minutes.

Wes Baynes was introduced in place of Simon Spender on the hour mark, while Kearney made a darting run to the by-line and his cross was parried by keeper Coburn, but the chance went begging.

Wrexham had another chance to take the lead in the 70th minute when Louis nodded down Carl Tremarco's centre by Whalley, trying to chip keeper Coburn, failed to hit the target.

In a last throw of the dice, Little sent on Neil Taylor for Whalley with nine minutes remaining.

A low Baynes cross swept through the six yard box and just needed a touch from a blue shirt, but even five minutes of injury time failed to provide a winner for Wrexham.
