THE opening half at Colwyn Bay will provide supporters with plenty of optimism going into the new season.
Wrexham controlled the first 45 minutes and everything about their game was impressive.

The defence never looked like being breached, the Reds passed the ball around well and enjoyed some neat build-up play that led to scoring chances.

And Wrexham took advantage of that by twice finding the back of the net through Carl Tremarco, who converted a stunning free-kick, and Shaun Whalley.

It was the duo's first ever goals for Wrexham and cemented a well deserved half time lead.

Wrexham took their foot off the gas in the second half and rarely threatened to add to their tally.

It was not as convincing as the opening period, and Colwyn Bay came more into the game by carving out the best chances, but you always felt Wrexham could step it up if they needed to - and the Reds kept another clean sheet.

With Wrexham also playing a behind closed doors friendly in the morning against The New Saints, manager Brian Little took the opportunity to give all his fit outfield players a 90 minute run-out.

Unfortunately, Wrexham lost 2-1 against TNS despite opening the scoring in the first minute through Marc Williams.

Having been present at both matches, Little feels he is close to identifying what his starting line-up will be when Wrexham start their Blue Square Premier campaign in 12 days.

Indications are that the majority of that side will be made up of players who were in action at Colwyn Bay.

Wrexham have one more friendly - at Stafford Rangers on Saturday - before the big kick-off and Little will name the side he feels will lead the Reds into battle on the opening day of the campaign against Stevenage.

It has been a promising pre-season up to now and fans can feel encouraged by what they have seen.

But of course, it is what happens from August 9 onwards that really counts.

After a slow start at Colwyn Bay, Wrexham soon began to settle and dictate the game.

The first scoring chance fell to Darran Kempson on 15 minutes after Shaun Whalley was fouled but he headed Silvio Spann's free-kick over the bar from close range.

But Wrexham took the lead after 23 minutes.

Levi Mackin was upended by Robbie Williams on the edge of the area and Carl Tremarco smashed an unstoppable free-kick past keeper Matthew Parry.

Wrexham continued to make all the running and Whalley centred for Louis whose header was blocked for a corner, and the striker then saw a near post header also blocked and fall wide of the target after being picked out by Kyle Critchell.

But the second goal Wrexham had been threatening came in the 36th minute.

Levi Mackin played in Whalley who beat the offside trap and closed in on goal before coolly slotting past Parry.

The second half began with Sam Aiston, who had impressed on the left flank, volleying over the bar.

There was an improvement from Colwyn Bay and their first chance of the game fell to Rob Hopley on 49 minutes but his powerful drive was well held by keeper Gavin Ward.

With victory already sealed, Wrexham took their foot off the gas as the half progressed, with Mackin off target with his effort.

Spann's 20 yard free-kick also fell wide after 78 minutes, and the Trinidadian was soon replaced on the right flank by trainee George Stewart.

Fellow trainee Obi Anoruo then took over from Whalley but Colwyn Bay almost reduced the deficit in the closing stages when Dean Canning fired narrowly wide after racing clear, while Hopley also brought an excellent save out of Ward.

Anoruo headed over for the Reds in the final minute but the first half goals ensured Wrexham left Llanelian Road with victory.
