DEAN SAUNDERS got his reign as Wrexham manager off to a winning start at Forest Green Rovers.
Wrexham twice came from behind to secure a 3-2 victory at The New Lawn, with leading scorer Jefferson Louis taking his tally for the season to eight goals with the injury time winner.

This was the kind of game that Wrexham, who were back on level terms thanks to Marc Williams' double, would have lost in the past but they dug in with a never-say-die attitude that all supporters want to see.

The constant rain and windy conditions hardly made for a great passing game of football but Wrexham were committed in trying to get something out of the game after twice trailing.

By his own admission, Saunders had to endure some nervy moments when balls forward posed plenty of problems in the Reds' defence.

Both sides enjoyed spells when they were on top but Wrexham kept going to the end.

Saunders can be pleased with the reaction of his players after a poor run of results saw manager Brian Little leave by mutual respect.

Nobody can fail to be impressed by Saunders' positive attitude and determination to succeed at Wrexham.

Saunders is not happy with mid-table and he is eager to install a winning mentality at The Racecourse.

And Saunders will be aiming to achieve something that Little was unable to when Wrexham host York City tomorrow in his first home match.

Wrexham have not won back-to-back matches since April 2007 and if they can see off York, it will be another morale boosting achievement for the former Wales international striker.

Saunders made five changes to the starting eleven for his first game in charge.

Two of those were enforced with Wes Baynes and Neil Taylor replacing injured duo Simon Spender and Carl Tremarco respectively.

The tactical switches saw Steve Evans, Andy Fleming - making his first appearance of the season - and Louis brought into the team in place of Darran Kempson, Christian Smith and Simon Brown.

But Saunders' reign as manager started in the worst possible manner with Forest Green taking the lead in the fourth minute.

Michael Symons' through ball should have been dealt with by the Reds' defence which was caught out and Andy Mangan lifted the ball over advancing keeper Gavin Ward.

Evans saw a header from Baynes' corner fly wide on 13 minutes but Wrexham were not making the most of the wind which was in their favour.

When Wrexham got the ball down on the floor there were some promising moments and Marc Williams played in Shaun Whalley whose low drive was blocked by keeper Ryan Robinson.

With lively Wrexham showing some good signs and push Forest Green back, they deservedly got back on level terms after 29 minutes.

Taylor crossed from the left and Marc Williams timed his jump brilliantly to rise above his marker and head past Robinson who was rooted to the spot.

Nat Brown then fired over the bar when a free-kick wasn't cleared as Wrexham, causing plenty of problems, continued to put constant pressure on the home side.

Wrexham were almost caught out a minute before the break when Mangan was put through on goal but his drive was brilliantly forced over the bar by Ward.

The Reds, who switched to a 3-4-3 formation for the second half, almost took the lead just 60 seconds after the restart when Fleming laid the ball off for Louis whose 25 yard curling attempt on goal fell narrowly wide with Robinson well beaten.

Baynes did well at the other end to come across and clear the danger when Nat Brown missed his kick putting Mangan clear on goal, while Evans cleared when Symons latched onto a long ball and rounded Ward.

But when Wrexham failed to clear the resulting 52nd minute throw-in, Forest Green reclaimed the lead as Mangan found the bottom corner with a low drive from just outside the area.

Back came Wrexham but Louis was unable to keep his effort down from Baynes' free-kick.

However, Wrexham equalised after 64 minutes in route one style.

Ward's free-kick was flicked on by Louis and Marc Williams shook off his marker before firing past Robinson with an excellent finish.

Wrexham continued to threaten but Forest Green showed they were not settling for a draw as Lee Fowler went close.

But it was Wrexham who came up with the winning goal in the second minute of injury time.

Substitute flicked the ball into the area from Baynes' free-kick and Marc Williams' low shot was turned across the line by Louis from close range.

Ward had to make two saves to maintain Wrexham's lead but they held on for victory.

It was just the start Saunders wanted and his reaction after the final whistle said it all.
