WREXHAM ended a successful pre-season with a resounding victory against Stafford Rangers on Saturday.
The 6-0 scoreline was emphatic as Wrexham bossed proceedings from start to finish at Marston Road.

Wrexham never looked back after the 12th mnute opening goal and their build up to the new Blue Square Premier season ended on a high note.

Despite emerging unbeaten in three games against Football League opponents, and without conceding, Wrexham had not scored a barrage of goals.

But with another clean sheet came six goals and manager Brian Little can be heartened by the fact that strike duo Shaun Whalley and Jefferson Louis grabbed a brace apiece.

The call for goals was answered. Yes, this was a Stafford team relegated from the Blue Square Premier last term, but credit must go to Wrexham for the way they went about it after taking the game to their hosts from the start.

Wrexham were eager to add to their tally even when they put the game beyond Stafford's reach - there was no let up from the Reds.

There is more pace about the team now than a year ago, with the Reds causing plenty of problems with their quick breaks forward both in the middle and on both wings.

It was a comfortable win with the result never in any doubt, and there were plenty of partnerships developing in positive fashion.

Little named a side that could possibly start Saturday's opening league match of the season against Stevenage Borough.

Gavin Ward lined up in goal, Simon Spender and Carl Tremarco operated as full-backs and Darran Kempson and Nat Brown in the centre of defence.

Simon Brown and Sam Aiston filled the wing positions with Tom Kearney - named as captain and Levi Mackin in the centre of midfield, and Louis and Whalley in attack.

Seven players made second half substitute appearances while a handful of Reds - including Michael Proctor and Kyle Critchell, who is suspended for the opening three games of the season - were not even on the bench.

There is plenty of competition for places this season and although a decent pre-season does not mean anything when the real stuff starts on Saturday, there is plenty of optimism at The Racecourse.

Wrexham made a lively start and Kempson saw an early effort blocked following a corner, while Dave McPherson's long range drive at the other end just fell wide of Ward's post.

But the Reds continued to press and Whalley picked out an unmarked Aiston in the eighth minute but his effort was blocked by advancing keeper Danny Alcock.

Louis then saw his header from Kearney's corner cleared off the line by Andre Francis, but the goal Wrexham had been threatening arrived after 12 minutes.

Louis flicked the ball though for Whalley who held off his man and struck an unstoppable angled drive from the edge of the area that beat the outstretched Alcock and nestled in the top corner.

And Wrexham made it 2-0 in the 24th minute.

Whalley latched on to Mackin's long ball over the top and shrugged off two defenders before coolly beating Alcock.

Aiston saw a long range effort fail to trouble the Stafford goal while Mackin volleyed wide, and Wrexham deserved their 2-0 lead at the break.

There was no let up from Wrexham at the start of the second half.

Simon Brown managed to dispatch a shot from Whalley's centre despite falling backwards but Alcock was able to save.

However, Wrexham scored a third goal on 48 minutes.

Louis beat the offside trap when racing on to a long clearance forward and he slipped the ball past Alcock from inside the area.

Kearney brought another save out of Alcock after neat build up play from the Reds, but the fourth goal arrived on 56 minutes.

Aiston found Tremarco on the over lap and his cross was converted by Louis who managed to get ahead of his marker to meet the ball.

Whalley should have completed his hat-trick in the 67th minute but he fired over from eight yards after meeting substitute Marc Williams's pull-back.

Marc Williams saw a header cleared off the line from substitute trialist Christian Smith's corner, but Wrexham made it 5-0 with six minutes remaining.

Simon Brown's effort, following a Marc Williams centre, was blocked into the path of substitute Silvio Spann and he fired past Alcock.

There was still time for a sixth goal as Kristian Smith's cross to the back post following a short corner was not gathered by keeper Alcock and substitute Steve Evans had the simple task of slotting into an empty net from close range.

That wrapped up the scoring and a respectable pre-season campaign from the Reds.
