IT was another missed opportunity for Wrexham at The Racecourse on Saturday.
Wrexham extended their run without a victory to five matches after they were held to a 1-1 draw by fellow strugglers Macclesfield Town on Saturday.

The share of the spoils means that rock bottom Wrexham are now seven points adrift of safety with just six matches remaining.

Time is rapidly running out for Wrexham, and it is their inability to win matches at a key time of the season - against teams at the wrong end of the table - is proving to be costly.

Just two points from a possible 15 is relegation form, and there is no excuse for not being able to clinch victories against Macclesfield, Mansfield, Dagenham and Redbridge and Barnet, as well as mid-table Brentford.

What is even more agonising is that Wrexham came through a potentially tricky spell of matches in January and February with a healthy return of points, including victories against promotion chasing Milton Keynes Dons and Darlington.

But the Reds really have thrown it away in the last couple of weeks when it really mattered most.

Manager Brian Little could not fault his players' commitment and he also rued the Reds' lack of quality.

No-one has thrown the towel in yet but you are only based on results and Wrexham, you would think, will need to win the majority of their remaining six matches.

Next up are second place MK Dons tomorrow and three points will at least keep alive the Reds' faint hopes of avoiding relegation.

Little, used to making changes after seeing his side slip nearer to relegation following their recent poor run, made five changes to the side beaten at Mansfield in midweek.

Steve Evans and Neil Taylor, both returning after a injury lay-offs, Richard Hope, Danny Williams and Marc Williams were all handed starting roles in place of Gareth Evans, Mike Williams, Sam Aiston, Paul Hall and Stuart Nicholson.

Wrexham had the better of the scoring opportunities in the first half, although they were restricted to half chances.

The first opening came on 12 minutes when Danny Williams, making his first start since October having returned as a second half substitute in the Mansfield defeat following back surgery, found Drewe Broughton who just cleared the bar.

Broughton then shot wide after taking Chris Llewellyn's pass and the tall striker just failed to capitalise on Danny Williams' centre.

Macclesfield came close to taking the lead when leading scorer Francis Green found Gareth Evans who saw his effort parried by Reds' keeper Gavin Ward and from the resulting corner, defender Shaun Brisley headed narrowly wide.

Back came Wrexham and Danny Williams' 25-yard free-kick was tipped over the bar by keeper Jonathan Brain in the 35th minute, and Llewellyn fired into the side netting, but it remained goal-less at the break.

However, Macclesfield broke the deadlock on 51 minutes.

A cross into the area was only partially cleared by Evans and Jamie Tolley fired past Ward from 12 yards.

And Macclesfield came close to doubling their lead just four minutes later when Green beat Hope to the ball and squared to Tolley who went wide with just Ward to beat.

Broughton headed wide from Simon Spender's cross at the other end but it was Macclesfield who looked more likely to add to the scoreline and Ward did well to keep out Green's effort, and Wrexham managed to clear their lines following the resulting goalmouth scramble.

Danny Thomas then saw his drive deflected off Phil Bolland but Ward managed to turn the ball behind for a corner.

Little needed to do something if Wrexham were to get anything out of the match, and keep their already faint hopes of avoiding relegation alive, and he made a double substitution after 68 minutes with Stuart Nicholson and Michael Proctor replacing Richard Hope and Danny Williams.

A enforced change was made just two minutes later when Spender was stretchered off with an ankle ligament injury and his place was taken by Aiston, meaning Llewellyn switched to the right-back position.

Despite having failed to threaten a goal in the second half, Wrexham found themselves back on level terms in the 79th minute.

Proctor's long throw-in was met by Evans and his looping header from inside the area found the far corner of the net despite the efforts of Brain.

Time was running out for Wrexham and Bolland's header from Proctor's free-kick was tipped around the post by Brain.

But eight minutes of injury time failed to produce a winner and Wrexham took a step nearer to relegation.
