IT may not have been the most convincing of performances but Wrexham got the result they needed against Ebbsfleet United at The Racecourse on Saturday.
For the seventh time in nine outings this season, Wrexham went behind but hit back with three goals before Ebbsfleet reduced the deficit to 3-2 in injury time.

Victory was important after back-to-back defeats had seen the Reds slide down the table, and even though it was not a great performance, three points is what counts.

Once again Wrexham were slow out of the blocks in Saturday's match which contained far too many stoppages and failed to flow.

Simple mistakes put the Reds under unnecessary pressure, passes went astray and the front two were given very little service.

Ebbsfleet looked more comfortable on the ball and were rewarded with a well deserved opening goal.

But unlike last week when Wrexham did not look like getting anything out ofthe game at Cambridge when they trailed, there was a better reaction this time around.

True, it wasn't pretty outside the odd glimpses but the goals duly arrived.

Even so, Wrexham had to endure a nervous last couple of minutes after Ebbsfleet, who never gave up, pulled a goal back at the start of injury-time, but the Reds held on.

Ebbsfleet showed great team spirit and seemed buoyed by the occasion, but Wrexham will face more demanding tests than this.

And that's when Wrexham will have to turn in better performances if they are going to string a run together in their bid for promotion.

Grays Athletic are next up on Saturday and Wrexham will be aiming to win twoconsecutive games for the first time in over a year.

Little made two changes to the side beaten at Cambridge.

Steve Evans, who had been away on international duty with Wales, earned an instant recall to the centre of defence at the expense of Shaun Pejic.

And Neil Taylor, having been hampered by injury and illness, was handed a first start of the season on the left of midfield, with Wes Baynes dropping to the substitutes bench.

That meant Shaun Whalley reverted to an attacking role with Simon Brown switching to the right of midfield.

Ebbsfleet made an impressive start and Darius Charles headed Stacy Long's third minute corner over the bar.

A poor Wrexham were making little of an impression in the final third and all they could muster was Levi Mackin's 20-yard drive which fell narrowly wide of the target,

It was Ebbsfleet who looked by far the more likely to open the scoring, and they deservedly did so in the 27th minute.

Long's corner was flicked on and midfielder Neil Barrett turned the ball home from close range.

Wrexham had claims for a penalty turned down when captain Tom Kearney was fouled by Darius Charles, while Ebbsfleet immediately went straight up the other end and Long brought a save out of Ward.

It was uninspiring stuff from Wrexham but the Reds levelled in the 36th minute.

Kearney's quickly taken free-kick through the centre was latched upon by Jefferson Louis who threaded the ball past keeper Lance Cronin.

Louis also saw his header from Kearney's cross saved by Cronin, but Wrexham were almost undone in injury time when Michael Gash nodded down and Barrett, afforded acres of space, fired just wide.

Michael Proctor was brought on in place of Taylor on the left flank for the start of the second half, and Wrexham found themselves leading 2-1 on 51 minutes.

Whalley centred from the right and Louis rose highest at the back post to head past Cronin from six yards.

Whalley and Mackin both had goal- bound efforts blocked in the area when a corner wasn't cleared, while Barrett cleared the bar at the other end.

Wrexham were indebted to Evans for keeping them ahead when the centre-back blocked with his body and then head, from Barrett and Moore respectively, with both bound for the net, while Gavin Ward tipped Gash's header over the bar.

It was still not a convincing display from Wrexham and despite Brown flicking the ball against the bar with a header, they needed the safety of a third goal - and it came in the 76th minute.

Brown was sent clear and bundled over in the penalty area by Charles, and the striker blasted home from the spot kick for his first Wrexham goal.

Ward turned a late Ebbsfleet effort round the post but the visitors did pull a goal back early in injury time when Gash slid in at the near post to slot home.

But Wrexham hung on for a welcome victory.
