WREXHAM came crashing back down to earth with a bang at The KitKat Crescent last night.
Brian Little's side, who had crushed pre-season title favoutites Stevenage Borough 5-0 on the opening day of the season, tasted defeat in the second game of the Blue Square Premier campaign.

York City ran out deserved 1-0 winners after putting on an excellent performance in front of their own fans.

The Minstermen showed just why the division is of a high standard and, as Little has ackowedged so often, with plenty of decent teams.

Wrexham failed to come to grips with York's 4-3-3 system in the opening half, with the home side causing plenty of problems in the final third.

The Reds had not been in it and York could have put the game beyond reach.

After the break, Wrexham certainly came more into the match and started creating scoring chances, but that was something York did throughout the 90 minutes.

Wrexham allowed York to create so many opportunties and eventually they paid the price with a poorly defended goal from a corner with 16 minutes remaining.

No-one said Wrexham would be able to go throughout the season without losing, and the outing at The KitKat showed that there are teams in the division with quality, and eager to get one over the Reds.

Little's new look side are still gelling and there will be highs and lows over the next nine months.

We are only two games in and we have still got lots to find out about this division - and about Wrexham.

Little made just one change to the starting line-up following that excellent opening day victory.

Midfielder Levi Mackin, sent off after receiving two yellow cards, was serving a one-match ban so Christian Smith stepped off the bench to make his full debut for the Reds having made a goal scoring substitute appearance in the Stevenage win.

There was not much incident in the opening exchanges, although Reds' right-back Simon Spender did well to put the ball behind for a corner at the other end after being put under pressure by Richard Brodie.

And York came close to opening the scoring on 17 minutes when Ben Purkiss was allowed to cross from the right and the ball reached unmarked striker Daniel McBreen but he failed to find the target from close range.

Simon Rusk's 25-yard drive was always rising and cleared Gavin Ward's bar but York, starting to take control of proceedings and continued to pressure the Reds' defence with their quick breaks.

Brodie failed to hit the target from six yards after meeting Mark Greaves knock down and McBreen played in Ben Wilkinson who fired across goal as York continued to demonstrate why they are seen as an impressive footballing side.

Little's response was to switch to a 4-5-1 formation to bolster the midfielder and stem the flow of attacks, with Shaun Whalley switching to the left and Jefferson Louis operating as a lone frontman.

A rare Wrexham effort came from Whalley in the 33rd minute but the striker could not direct his shot on target, while Louis headed Sam Aiston's centre wide of the mark.

Although he had not been tested, York keeper Artur Krysiak was forced off with a dislocated finger two minutes before the break after landing awkwardly under the challenge of Simon Brown, and he was replaced by Josh Mimms, son of former Everton and Blackburn shot stopper Bobby.

The interval did stop York threatening the Wrexham goal and an unmarked McBreen somehow put a header wide when the Reds failed to cut out a 48th minute free-kick.

Wrexham hit back with Aiston embarking on a surging run from the edge of his own area, beating two men, but after laying the ball off, Whalley's effort was comfortably saved by Mimms.

The Reds' best chance arrived on 61 minutes when York only half cleared but Aiston's snap shot from the edge of the area was turned away by a stretching Mimms.

Although surviving the odd scare, Wrexham were coming more into the game and Louis flicked the ball on for Simon Brown who ran in behind the home defence and fired straight at Mimms.

Carl Tremarco brought an excellent save out of Mimms who tipped the left-back's dipping 25 yard drive over for a corner, while at the other end, Wilkinson's long range effort was superbly tipped over by Ward.

But from the resulting corner, York took a 74th minute lead.

Rusk sent in the flag kick and Greaves rose at the back post to head home.

York almost made it 2-0 when a pacy break left Wrexham stretched at the back but once again Ward performed heroics to keep out Rusk.

But there was no way back for Wrexham and they will try to bounce back at Rushden and Diamonds on Sunday.
